Officials: Jewish extremists may crash plane on Temple Mount

Israeli security officials have recently become increasingly concerned that right-wing extremists might be plotting an attack on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem to derail Israel's planned withdrawal from the Gaza Strip. The Shin Bet security service and the police are preparing for a number of possible terror attack scenarios at the sacred Old City site, Israeli security sources said on Saturday night.

Speaking on the Channel Two "Meet the Press" program yesterday, Public Security Minister Tzachi Hanegbi confirmed that the security establishment had identified rising intent among right-wing extremists to carry out a Temple Mount attack.

"There is no information about specific individuals, because the Shin Bet and police would not let them continue with their plot," said Hanegbi. "But there are troubling indications of purposeful thinking, and not detached philosophy... There is a danger that extremists would make use of the most explosive site, in the hope that a chain reaction would bring about the destruction of the peace process."

Security sources on Saturday night said possible actions included an attempt to crash a drone packed with explosives on the Temple Mount, or a manned suicide attack with a light aircraft during mass Muslim worship on the Mount. Other possibilities include an attempt by right-wing extremists to assassinate a prominent Temple Mount Muslim leader, perhaps from the Waqf Islamic trust.

Well now, this is interesting.

Far right Israeli militant groups - deeply penetrated by intelligence agents - make convenient proxies to advance the agenda of elements of the Israeli Security State.

Take, for instance, the murder of Yitzak Rabin.

From David Guyatt:

Officially, Rabin's murder was a cut and dried affair. Right leaning religious zealot, Yigal Amir, was caught in the act of killing Rabin. He was arrested and later convicted. An amateur cameraman, Ronnie Kempler, later released video footage he had taken from a nearby rooftop, showing Amir shooting Rabin in the back. This film was broadcast around the world, leaving little room for doubt that Amir was guilty.

Surprisingly, however, doubts did arise - and quickly. Just a week after Rabin's death Professor Michael Hersiger, a historian at Tel Aviv University told the press "in my opinion there was a conspiracy." Hersiger went on to say he believed the conspiracy involved the Shabak, Israel's General Security Services - responsible for internal security - because of the odd connections Shabak had with Yigal Amir, the accused killer. At that time, little was publicly known about Amir except that he was deeply involved in "Eyal," a right-wing religious organisation with a political agenda. Eyal vehemently opposed the peace process, which was the centrepiece of the Rabin administration.

Then on 16 November 1995, territorial leader and later member of the Knesset - Israel's Parliament - Benny Eilon, told a press conference that Shabak "founded and funded" Eyal. He also later revealed in private that he had been warned ahead of time by former Mossad senior officer, Yitzhak Shamir, that "they" were planning to kill Rabin. Eilon didn't say who "they" were but did add that Shamir knew of the conspiracy in October 1995, two months before it happened. If that wasn't bad enough, the next evening Israeli television broadcast a report revealing that Avishai Raviv, the leader of "Eyal" was a long-term Shabak agent who operated under the codename "Champagne." Raviv, it was later learned, was an expert at promoting "fifth columnists."

...

Anyone looking at Ronnie Kempler's video film taken from a rooftop across the street, can see for themselves the very odd behaviour of Rabin's bodyguards. As Rabin leaves the peace rally and heads for his car, he is closely shadowed by two Shabak bodyguards, stationed on each side and slightly behind him. The one protecting Rabin's left flank, without warning stops, turns away, and folds his hands across his stomach. He then remains immobile as Rabin, unaware of this, continues walking. This curious conduct opens a large gap on Rabin's left rear side that allows Amir, who had remained stationery until that moment, to dart around and behind Rabin and shoot him in the back. It is hard to conclude that this sequence of events was anything other than planned. At the very least, the bodyguard is guilty of gross incompetence and failed to protect his "client" at the most critical moment of his life.

1. Oh, brother!!!

Messianic Jews believe the destruction of the mosque and construction of the temple would expedite the appearance of a Jewish messiah, or redeemer, who would rule the world from Jerusalem and bring about the salvation of the Jewish people.

Ultimate red line

Muslim leaders in Palestine have warned of "unforeseeable consequences" and "horrible repercussions" all over the world in case "anything happened to al-Aqsa Mosque".

"This is the ultimate red line. If Jewish terrorists embarked on such an act of sheer madness, they would trigger huge fires all over the world … . Only God knows how the fires would be extinguished," said Kamal Khatib, deputy head of Israel's powerful Islamic Movement.

Speaking to Aljazeera.net he said an attack on al-Aqsa Mosque would be viewed as an appalling provocation by the world's Muslim population.

"If such a thing happened, God forbid, it would galvanise the world's 1.2 billion Muslims, and there would be a backlash and anger all over the world."

2. Surely such an attack would be regarded as appalling by all
by all people everywhere, except for the most extreme fundamentalist
nutters.

As it was Sharon who began the current intafada by walking on the
Temple Mount, simply because he could, there can be little confidence
in the government's will to thwart such an attempt.

And as Israel can depend on Bush to deliver nothing more than a
slap on the wrist, it may take place sooner rather than later.

3. The Slap on the Wrest
is what gets me. For the life of me I can't understand this head in the sand policy of the US regarding the I/P conflict. If the US wants to fight terrorism then actualize a just peace in the area.

5. If they did this...
Would they be classed as "Jewish fundamentalist terrorists"?

6. Look for Condi Rice and Bush to say that there was no
specific intelligence if it happens.
