Jewish group blasts 'offensive' artwork
Edited on Sun Dec-12-04 08:18 AM by drdon326

Public art in Melbourne's CBD depicting dead militant Palestinian leaders has sparked an outcry from the nation's peak Jewish group.

The Australian and Jewish Affairs Council has branded the artwork, which features the faces of two former Hamas leaders, offensive.

The privately funded exhibition, on the exterior of an office building off a busy Melbourne laneway, depicts the faces of four Palestinians killed by Israelis.

Two of the faces belong to former Hamas leaders, Sheikh Ahmad Yassin and Abdul Aziz Rantisi, both of whom were killed by Israelis.

"I think that it is appropriately located at the end of an alley right next to the garbage cans," Australian and Jewish Affairs Council senior policy analyst Ted Lapkin said.

1. I think we should censor all art.
So much of it embarrasses the war-mongers.

from...http://silentrunning.tv/archives/005179.php

He's glorifying people whose lives were dedicated to the extermination of every last Jew on the planet. They were vermin who deserved everything they got at the hands of the IDF, and people who support them deserve to share their fate.

Its a pleasure to know there are Aussies who understand this truth and reading this re-affirms my respect.

8. the publically funded stuff
Edited on Sun Dec-12-04 07:54 PM by Djinn
was removed pretty quickly - this is privately funded - if people find a depiction of Rantissi offensive perhaps they should avoid newsagents and every form of media.

While Australia does not have any laws guranteeing freedom of speech we are pretty tolerant of art just ask the freaked out Christian about their reaction to Piss Christ - you don't have to like it, you don't have to look at it, you're not paying for it.

As for your trip I may sponsor more artwork the Australian and Jewish Affairs Council find offensive just to ensure this continues to be the plan.

And once again you link to an admittedly RIGHT WING and trollish personal websites to back up your views...if you feel any kinship with this twat:

If you are offended by strong right wing views and bad language, you should probably fuck off now and go hug a tree.

then I really wonder don.

10. pretty much don
it's art (my or your definition of art being irrelevant - personally I'm a bit of a philistine and am dubious of much that's deemed art but I beleive it's something to do with the eye of the beholder)

I find the internet sites you routinely visit to be more repulsive than this dfisplay highlighting the undemocratic practice of state sanction assasination but that's all just opinion - your is no more valid than mine and neither of ours is any more valid than the bloke who commissioned or produced this series.

I've seen BOTH displays - neither were my cup of tea but that's kind of not the point.

If it'll make you feel better - "we're all a bunch of anti-semites down here" :eyes:

11. uh-huh...
ART is a media....as is writing,broadcasting,poetry,etc..

I wonder if an art exhibit offeneded blacks , gays , and asians in a racist manner, would you say "dont look"??...I doubt it.

"If it'll make you feel better - "we're all a bunch of anti-semites down here".......no way.....but even you must be a little shocked this kind of display occured again...in Melbourne ....in 7 months??

12. pictures of Rantissi et al
are not offensive in and of themselves, if they are I suggest you write all the newspapers and TV stations who print/broadcast pictures of the same.

as for the "even you" remark - not even going to bother with that

16. they can watch all they like
they can not dictate what private citizens display on private walls however.

It's also strecthing things an awful lot to say a picture of Rantissi is anti-semitic

18. SO every newspaper that printed his picture
including all the Israeli ones are anti-semitic???? is there any wonder the term ani-semitism has lost ALL meaning when it's used for this - many many respected newspapers have printed opinion pieces on the folly of state santioned assasination - they usually illustrate the piece with a piccie of the latest target.

Are all photo's of Sharon racist? do they instantly "glorify" him just by depicting him.

Of course I'd be on a religious fundies hit list I'm female I live in sin and I'm never giving up whiskey, that doesn't mean I approve of assasination - I was nearly on the Julian Knight hitlist a long time ago - didn't want him executed either

Seriously get a grip

20. For an intelligent person......
you're lousy at feigning ignorance.

Its not the pictures and you know it....its a tribute to terrorists whose stated purpose is to kill Israelis and Jews.

And you also lousy at feigning why Yassin, Rantisi et al would want to kill you.....you know exactly why.

Telling me "to get a grip" may make you feel better but it changes nothing .

21. not feigning anything
unlike you I have actually SEEN the display - unlike you I've actually SPOKEN with the artist (although hadn't when I wrote the previous posts)

Also Hamas would not be fans of mine because I'm not a fundie muslim -no argument there - I'm no fan of theirs and I wish Israel had not tried to destabilise the SECULAR PLO by initially funding them.

Conversations with you don rarely make me feel better

13. Shame on me for taking the bait and going to the link
But exhibition curator and director Andrew Mac said the artist was trying to bring attention to what could be called state sponsored assassination or terrorism.

One can argue that when it comes to the I/P conflict there is no fair and balanced point of view. Both sides demonize the other. Both sides engage in terrorism. Both sides have slaughtered the innocent.

If there is a complaint I have about the American Left is that our obsession with Israel's wrongdoing has blinded a lot of us to the wrongdoing being done in the name of the Palestinians, just as many of us are blind to the cruel nature of those we label as Iraqi "freedom fighters."

I am sick of violence!

Neither side can claim the moral high ground (or is it the high moral ground?), because both sides engage in terrorism and kill innocents.
