Palestinians back away from suicide attacks

By Joshua Mitnick
THE WASHINGTON TIMES

RAMALLAH, West Bank -- Palestinians have begun to sour on suicide bombings after years of honoring the dead attackers as heroes, and some have been emboldened to question whether the deadly blasts will hasten the goal of establishing an independent state.

In the aftermath of a Feb. 18 suicide bombing that killed five persons in Tel Aviv, a chorus of condemnation has been sounded in the bustling shops of downtown Ramallah, the offices of civic leaders and the dens where Palestinian militants take refuge from Israeli troops.

"We are not with this operation. The timing is wrong," said a member of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade who called himself Abu Yazan and wore black-and-white Fila sneakers.

"We are now talking about a period of . The rules state that we do not attack," he said.

1. So,
they will not abandon suicide bombings because it is morally abhorrent. But they will because it is not working to gain their goals? As long as their goals include the elimination of Israel as a Jewish state, nothing will work for them.

7. Here's a wee dose of reality for you

NO nation has ever done anything because it's morally right

Israel is not abandoning Gaza because the occupation (and all the human rights violations that entails) is immoral but because it is counterproductive to ISRAELI interests.

The UK did not go to war with Hitler because it was morally right but because German expansion was threatening the dominance of Great Britain

Vietnam did not invade Cambodia and depose Pol Pot because it was morally right.

Nations do what is best for them and their interests ALWAYS, sometimes happilly that coincides with the moral thing to do (like in the above examples) but just as often doesn't.

As long as their goals include the elimination of Israel as a Jewish state, nothing will work for them.

Which "their" are you referring to - as far as I'm aware Palestinians do not think with one shared brain and again as far as I'm aware you havn't asked each and every one their views.

The PLO accepted Israel's right to exist more than ten years ago.

One has to wonder whether assisting Hamas in the early years in order to develop a non secular (and therefore less palatable to the west) alternative to the PLO was such a good idea in hindsight

(Edited because I appear to have lost the ability to spell today)

4. Excellent news!
Now, if only Sharon doesn't go to the Temple Mount this time, we might get some PROGRESS!

Cool screen-name, by the way. You're Israeli? (If so, I have a question unrelated to politics, and I'd like to know what it's like in Israel these days. I'm hoping to take the Birthright Isael trip to an Ulpan in Tsfat summer of 2006.)

Gar l'Shalom!
