Members of the U.S. ultra-Orthodox community are furious. They recall how easily 50,000 people took to the streets to demonstrate against the Oslo Accord. Yet pressure on the community's leadership this time around lead to a letter of protest. Nothing more. Silence pervailed.

“The president is in favor, congress is in favor, the American public is in favor,” is the explanation provided by Jewish organizations, and it may serve to explain it all."

I think your post is misleading. Some Orthodox Jews may be compromising but it looks like the majority of jews favor the Gaza evacuation. Their motivation may have nothing to do with who or what 'is in favor'.

The four paragraph rule may have interfered with the presentation so I really think other readers need to go to the link.

2. Headline is misleading, borders on oxymoronism, a sign of propaganda.

The story is approximately that US Jews for the most part are not protesting, and indeed seem to support the pullout.

3. I thought the headline....

..referred to the foes of pullout. They had promised to bring thousands of American Jews to Gaza to block disengagement (with their bodies if necessary) and embarrass Sharon. None of this came to fruition. Instead, we got mostly silence.
