American Jews tested by emotional Gaza pullout

NEW YORK (AFP) - Watching the historic Israeli pullout from the Gaza strip has been a harrowing experience for many American Jews, torn between sympathy for the uprooted Jewish settlers and support for the evacuation.

In New York, which hosts the largest Jewish population of any city outside Tel Aviv, organized protests in the past week against the Gaza withdrawal have been vocal but sparsely attended.

And, I believe we have this week's Ironic Quote of the Week:

<snip>
Those opposed to the Gaza withdrawal believe outrage among Jews in the United States has been muted by an unwillingness to challenge a policy instigated by the Israeli government and supported by the US administration.

"The problem has been that the Jewish organizations are afraid to criticize Israel, especially when George W. Bush supports the same policy," said Morton Klein, president of the Zionist Organization of America.

"We feel this as a tragic and historic mistake that harms in a serious way the international war against radical Islamic terrorism," said Klein, who insisted that many American Jews shared the same opinion.

"When I speak at synagogues -- every week I speak somewhere -- I get standing ovations in my speech against the Gaza (pullout)," he said.
<snip>

Of course, had a Muslim made that comment . . .

2. My father he is a Holocaust Survivor
this whole mess led to Flashbacks of the small town and German soldiers

Of course he grew up in a very small town and over 70 members of the family became ashes at Treblynka, so I don't fault him for not seeing how much of this mess AFFECTS two people... he is 80, no use in discusing this with him

Me, I saw the trains at Sebernicze, and was reminded of that and I have said it, due to Ameircan Actions over the last five years it is now up to Israeli and Palestinians, for we have no moral authority... and shit both sides deserve criticism for not being able to keep their fanatics from determining policy, but until both sides decide to play nice and recognize the other, there is nothing any of us at distance can do

3. I suspect that Mr Klein doesn't speak to many Reform
congregations.

5. I'm sure that's because you're afraid to disagree with Bush.
