Was Tenet A Knowingly Complicit Fall Guy For PNAC on 9/11 and Iraq?
Edited on Sun Jul-25-04 06:45 PM by Zorra
Richard Shelby was primarily responsible for Georget Tenet being approved for CIA Director.

President Clinton's first choice for CIA Director, Anthony Lake, was not confirmed because Shelby fought tooth and nail against his confirmation. It has been said that Shelby ran an outright republican right wing smear campaign against Anthony Lake. Shelby spoke very highly of George Tenet prior to and after Tenet's being confirmed by the Shelby headed Intelligence Oversight Committee, and Tenet was easily and rapidly confirmed by this Committee.

Not long after the appointment of Tenet as CIA head, Shelby and Tenet began feuding.

I never have been able to figure out why Tenet was so easily approved as CIA head. But republicans consistently make bad decisions in matters related to intelligence. No republican should ever be the head of an intelligence committee, and no intelligence committee should ever have a republican majority. They have really blown it in big way, starting with the trashing of Anthony Lake, to 9/11, and on to Iraq.

Tenet became the director of Central Intelligence in 1997, while former President Clinton was in office. Bush kept him in the position, a move Shelby said was a mistake.

Ironically, Clinton's nomination of Tenet as DCI was largely due to Shelby's actions. Shelby's chairmanship of the intelligence committee permitted him to block a Senate vote to confirm Clinton's first choice, Anthony Lake. Ultimately Lake withdrew his name and Clinton nominated Tenet, then the CIA's acting director.

After the Senate confirmed Tenet, Shelby called the new DCI a "man of integrity and professionalism," possessing "a distinguished record of service in the intelligence community."

CIA recovering after failure to prevent attacks

"He's the best we've had in a long time," says Bandar bin Sultan, Saudi Arabia's ambassador to Washington for 2 decades. He said Tenet developed close contacts with security services in the Middle East as he tried to negotiate an Israeli-Palestinian cease-fire, and those contacts could be crucial in the new U.S. campaign against terrorism. "President Bush has developed confidence in him in a very short period of time," Bandar says. "I doubt very much that he will be made a scapegoat."

A former deputy director of the CIA, he got the top job 4 years ago after President Clinton's first choice, Anthony Lake, withdrew his nomination under grilling by Shelby's committee. When Bush took over, he asked Tenet to stay in the job. Influential figures from Boren to Bush's father urged the new president to keep Tenet.

{b]After the attacks, Bush went out of his way to offer Tenet private reassurances, a White House official says. When Vice President Cheney was later asked whether Tenet should stay on, he said he had "great confidence" in Tenet. "It would be a tragedy if somehow we were to go back now in the search for scapegoats and say that George Tenet or any other official ought to be eliminated at this point," Cheney said.

Tenet's Perjury And Resignation
by Mark Levey
published by Democrats.com

Reporters for the major papers may have missed the first page of the biggest story since the 9/11 attacks. When his resignation becomes effective July 11, 2004, CIA Director George Tenet will no longer be covered by Executive Privilege. He may then be compelled to testify about what he as a Director of Central Intelligence told the President regarding several matters about which both he and Bush have thus far displayed a startling lack of candor.

Tenet will no doubt be pressed to truthfully answer what he said to George W. Bush in the weeks before the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Owing to his perjury before the 9/11 Commission, Tenet has also forfeited his qualified immunity on topics relevant to his meetings with the President in August and early September 2001. This will give potential prosecutors enormous leverage. In exhange for his true testimony about this, and what he knows about the Bush White House's illegal outing of undercover CIA officer Valerie Plame, we should expect Tenet to ask for and receive immunity from prosecution.

Tenet's perjury and resignation presents Congressional investigators and a special prosecutor with an unexpected opportunity later this summer to finally get to the truth of what the President was actually knew and when he knew it. This is also, of course, the Bush White House and the Republican's worst nightmare.

The widely-known but as yet unspoken truth in Washington is that Tenet committed perjury in his April 14 statements before the 9/11 Commission. The CIA Director raised his right hand and was sworn-in before that official inquiry. He stated repeatedly he had not met with President Bush in August 2001. When given several opportunities by Commission members to correct or retract his story during his sworn testimony, he did not do so. It wasn't a momentary memory lapse or slip of the tongue. Tenet lied repeatedly under oath. That is the very definition of perjury. But, within hours it was apparent that public records contradicted Tenet's statement about his meetings with Bush. CIA aides called reporters later that afternoon and offered that Tenet had "misspoken." The alternative explanation given was that Tenet had "temporarily forgotten," and that is what was reported in the newspapers. The story was all but buried.

It's interesting that they are going after Richard Shelby right now. I can't figure out if he is a patriot, or possibly part of a long term PNAC conspiracy to establish totalitarian control of the US. Did he feud with Tenet because he recognized that Tenet was not doing his job, or was the feud with Tenet a smokescreen to cover his ass and make it look like Tenet was inept, when all the time he knew that Tenet was being a deliberate fall guy for the PNAC? Why did Shelby fight so hard to trash Anthony Lake and have Tenet appointed CIA Director? And now there is the 9/11 Commission report, the purpose of which seems to be to provide proof that the US needs a highly centralized police/intelligence agency. This is consistent with the report below, written by Shelby in 2002. It also blames Intelligence leaders for failure to report information, while at the same time absolves field agents for 9/11. It's a long report, and it is a PDF file:

Sen. Shelby the subject of probe on 9/11 intelligence leak
Investigation linked to 2001 al-Qaida communications, sources say
EXCLUSIVE
By Pete Williams and Robert Windrem
NBC News

WASHINGTON - Information about a criminal investigation of possible intelligence leaks by Sen. Richard Shelby was referred to the Senate Ethics Committee on Thursday, senior law enforcement and intelligence officials have told NBC News.

The investigation centers on the leak of highly classified intelligence related to al-Qaida communications in June 2002, primarily to CNN.

CNN reported on June 20 that in one communication intercepted by the National Security Agency on Sept. 10, 2001, an individual was overheard saying, "The match begins tomorrow" while in another that same day, a second person said, "Tomorrow is zero hour." In both, the speakers were in Afghanistan and were speaking to individuals in Saudi Arabia. The intercept was not found until Sept. 12, 2001.

The intercept was from a communications channel the United States had identified as a key communications link for al-Qaida operatives.

The White House and CIA were incensed by the leak and demanded an investigation. Vice President Dick Cheney was so angered by the leak that he personally called the chairs of both the House and Senate Intelligence committees, believing the leak came from inside the committees.

My question: Was this intercept deliberately "not found" until Sept. 12 because someone knew that al Qaida was going to attack on 9/11, and wanted a "new Pearl Hartbor" to occur?

Why did Shelby leak this information? I can't figure him out in all this.

I'm totally MIHOP. So anyone that wants to call me a tin foil hatter can do so, but I'm beginning to think that the coincidence theorists are more deserving of tin foil hat status than MIHOPpers.

All I really need for evidence is to see Bu$h's face while he was reading "My pet Goat" on 9/11. The huge mass of other corroborative evidence is just gravy. And the 9/11 commission report....hmmmm. And why are they gagging Sibel Edmonds?

The PNAC made 9/11 happen on purpose.

Interestingly, the PNAC Statement of Principles is dated June, 3, 1997, the same year Tenet was confirmed as CIA director.

They were all part of ONE operation.

The suggestion of a "catastrophic attack" on the US in PNAC is obscene, yet it only seems to bother a few people.

And that peculiar look on Bush's face in the Sarasota classroom: damning.

2. A question: Why were all these right wingers so
favor of keeping Tenet on after the 9/11 attack?

The answer may be: Because he was willing to be the fall guy for 9/11, and also willing to be the fall guy for the faulty WMD in Iraq information purportedly given to Bu$h and his administration.

Tenet may have been part of this plan all along. He should be screaming bloody murder right now. Everyone knows about Cheney and Rumsfeld and their OSP.

"Listen, George, we are going to pretend that you did not give us the intelligence that would have been the basis for thwarting the attack on 9/11, and are going to force you to give us false intelligence about WMD in Iraq. We will refuse to accept anything else. Then we will have committees loyal to our cause investigate this intelligence, and they will blame everything on you in an attempt to divert blame away from the Bu$h administration. You will, of course have to resign, but you will not be prosecuted. Make a little bit of a stink about all this to cover your ass, but don't go overboard. Then just quietly drift into the woodwork and everyone will forget all about it. Perhaps we can arrange a little bonus to help you in your retirement? If Bu$h is re-selected, you'll be home free. The dictatorship will be complete, and no one will ever ask you to testify about anything. Thanks for all that you have done for us."

Signed, your friends at the PNAC.

All the Committees investigating these events have placed blame on Tenet, and were whitewashes for the PNAC Bu$h administration.

Again, why isn't Tenet screaming bloody murder about this? He needs to write a book, and fast, if he is not complicit in all this. He needs to blow the whistle on the PNAC Bu$h administration and how they skewed intelligence deliberately. If he does not take action, we will have to assume that he was in the PNAC pocket. Because it sure looks like he may have been.

People in the Intelligence community that are still loyal to the people of the United States need to start speaking out against the PNAC Bu$h administration because of what they have done, and before the election.

You got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run.
You never count your money when you’re sittin’ at the table.
There’ll be time enough for countin’ when the dealin’s done.

Now ev’ry gambler knows that the secret to survivin’
Is knowin’ what to throw away and knowing what to keep.
’cause ev’ry hand’s a winner and ev’ry hand’s a loser,
And the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep.

4. Tenet made his career out of bootlicking.
Bush wanted a justification for invading Iraq, and Tenet told aWol exactly what he wanted to hear. Fuck both of them.
