It is vital to recall the Context of the Lesbian "Attack" (Alan Keyes) |
|
The moderator's question was "Is homosexuality a choice?"
That basic question has only made national news once this year, when Alan Keyes publically condemned Mary Cheney as a "selfish hedonist" for 'chosing' homosexuality.
Again, the question on the floor was, "is homosexuality a choice?"
Bush refused to answer the question. Kerry rose to contradict one of the Republican party's most famous voices on the topic of homosexuality by saying that he thinks Mary Cheney would say she is who she was born to be. Given the recent history of "is gay a choice?" as a political issue it would be almost bizarre to cite anyone OTHER than Mary Cheney.

3. I'm not saying people SHOULD talk about Mary Cheney |
|
but since it's an "issue", it's important to connect the issue to Alan Keyes.
There would be no controversy at all if Kerry had begun his remarks with, "I disagree with what Alan Keyes said. I think Mary Cheney..."
