Nagourney article discussing M Cheney fallout-Avoid if you can't handle it
For Kerry, a Few Words That May Be Debatable
By ADAM NAGOURNEY
Published: October 18, 2004

Amid signs of Democratic concern, Mr. Kerry's advisers acknowledged Sunday that some voters perceived Mr. Kerry's remark as an invasion of Ms. Cheney's privacy, a gratuitous personal insult, or a crass political calculation by which Mr. Kerry was trying to drive a wedge between Mr. Cheney and conservatives unaware that his daughter was gay.

Still, as the fallout continued this weekend, some Democrats were clearly concerned, aware that there has rarely been a presidential campaign as close as this one. Three organizations released polls on Sunday showing that Mr. Bush had improved his standing. Time magazine showed him with a lead of two percentage points while Newsweek found he was ahead by four percentage points. The latest Gallup poll said Mr. Bush had a lead of eight percentage points.

Considering that most polls found that viewers judged Mr. Kerry the clear winner of all three debates, some Democrats said the most likely explanation for these results was a sharp response to the remark, noting that the polling interviewing was taking place amid intense news coverage of this dispute.

It is not clear whether this is a passing dust-up, as Mr. Kerry's advisers said in dismissing these latest polls, or the kind of event that could prove consequential in a race in which voters' allegiance to Mr. Kerry is anything but deep. The concern for Mr. Kerry, of course, is that with 16 days until the election, passing dust-ups can end up not passing soon enough.

13. Right.
Let's just all stick our heads in the sand and pretend that Kerry's remark didn't cause a backlash. Of course it had an impact. I knew from the second he said it, it was a tactical error. I was hoping that it didn't have legs. I hate that it did, but I'm not about to try and spin it.

7. Kerry's favorable numbers are over 50%
Naggy is dead wrong. Kerry's favorable numbers are over 50% in the last Gallup poll (which oversamples Repukes by 9%). If the Mary statement had any impact it would show up here.

5. The Repukes are in more trouble than Kerry on this.
The Republican Party is owned by Christian Fundamentalists who believe all lesbians to be evil sinners who will go to Hell. That includes Mary Cheney. A face has now been put on their bigotry. And it is the face of the daughter of the Republican VP. They are in a bit of a mess.

8. Do they still want to use "gay marriage" as a closer issue ???
No, I don't think so....:) Kerry and Edwards necessarily chopped them off at the knees because they knew what their intent was to use "gay" issues to get out their base...Now, it will be just a little more difficult for them.

11. Has Mary Cheney herself said anything?
This is such a non-issue, but for the fact that the GOP doesn't really want to talk about it as it relates to Mary's rights as a lesbian.

12. Agree. However, I'm starting to think we could've
received all the benefit from this but none of the costs if Kerry and Edwards didn't say it themselves. Hardball campainging works best if don't get any of the dirt on yourself. Some 527 could've politely informed people about the numerous gay relatives of leading right wingers, which would've suppresed the anti-gay conservative vote and would've highlighted Republican hypocrisy on this issue.
