Remarks of Teresa Heinz Kerry today. Two quotes of hers very compelling.

The full transcript of her remarks is linked below:

------------

Teresa Heinz Kerry:

" . . . sometimes it is important to speak out even when we think no one is listening, and perhaps especially then. We cannot always know how our words or deeds will resonate across time and along the strands of human connection. All we can know is that absent affirmative acts of individual conscience, evil triumphs."

and

"What philanthropy teaches is that a spirit of generosity and connection and mutual respect does not require us to sacrifice ourselves. Rather, it reminds us that, in being for others, we are also for ourselves. In strengthening and respecting others, we strengthen and respect ourselves."

3. Thank you!
...the first quote is just what I needed to hear today. Puts into better context Gore's speech, Hersh's words, Richard Clarke's comments, Paul O'Neill's book, Edmonds' bravery, Wilson's outrage, William Pitt's 4 year long effort, DU posters rants, and Kerry's determination.

I am going to email this around to friends. This is something that Olberman, Rather, and Moyers should see...

Thank you Ms. Heinz.

7. Yes! It will be so wonderful to have a well-read First Lady instead
of insipid Laura.

9. I love Mama T
The local (pittsburgh) political cartoonist some months ago wrote a wonderful piece about her. Excerpts: (BTW she addressed the national political cartoonist convention here)

" I made the mistake of mentioning to Teresa that one of the VIPs who declined our invitation to speak was Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. She began her speech to the cartoonists by concocting a Rummy refusal letter.
"Dear Rob," she said. "We know what we know, which is that I would like to be there. But we know what we don't know, which is whether more pressing matters might arise. And we don't know what we don't know, which is whether I might leave you in the lurch. So given what we know and don't know, the answer is no. Sincerely, Rummy. P.S. Have you thought of inviting Teresa Heinz?"
-snip-
She went on to explain that her husband should not be depicted as a groundhog, a basset hound, or coming out of a Heinz ketchup bottle, each time pointing to a cartoon example of what not to do. She encouraged us instead to remember Kerry's "dignified stature, his noble chin, his focused gaze, and his compassionate smile." In other words, "draw him like this":
An adoring, Mt. Rushmore-like sketch of John F. Kennedy appeared on the screen.
-snip-
he praised editorial cartooning as a "noble" profession "piercing the veil of smug self-certainty and righteous self-importance that often creep into public life. You can make us laugh, squirm, get angry. You can make us question, and you can make us think.
"Yes, use it wisely -- and ideally don't use it on my husband or me! -- but above all, use it. I know there is pressure on you as cartoonists just to go for the joke, just to be funny and not to offend.
"I have seen the alternative to a free press. Nothing should concern us more than when journalists feel they cannot express their doubts and speak their minds."

14. I love her!
I would just hope that if/when she becomes First Lady, she will continue to speak her mind the way she has always done.

I loved Hillary when Bill was running for President. After he got in office, she became MUCH more careful about what she said in public.

17. Don't you think it's time for the women of this country to have a
strong, intelligent role model again instead of that thing that hides in the attic of the WH and comes out only at election time and wants women to always defer to their brilliant men??? How can a nation where so many women are in good positions in the work force fall for this shit?? Unless the women now are yearning to go home and bake cookies...........we need a WOMAN (a real one) back in that big white house.

It will truly be nice to have two people in the WH who are not sociopathic morons.

24. A First Lady who can THINK and SPEAK
unlike stepford wife Laura. That last debate she looked like she wanted to be anywhere but there--imagine how embarrassing it must be to be married to the moron Chimp.
