Jon Stewart = "They're all dicks. I dont want to leave anyone out." |
|
Talking about his weekend.
"I got a haircut. Called a guy a dick on National TV."
"I don't think Novak broke his hip. I think the hip was trying to escape."
He just kips ripping on Crossfire. This is the beginning of a fued to humiliate all other fueds.

1. His point was well made |
|
He does a comedy show. They wanted him to be funny. He went to Crossfire as a person, not a comedian.
They have a show that stages "debates" between people who are decision-makers and government officials. Is that what Crossfire wants from them? No, they want them to be political.

2. It's kinda cute. You realize it's about 80% PR stunt for the Daily Show |
|
Stewart's great. But ripping on Tucker whathisface and calling them all dicks is mostly guerrilla marketing. This is supposed to drive up Stewart's ratings and I'm sure it'll work great. The more I hear that "hurting America" line repeated, the sillier it gets.
I love the Daily Show. Stewart's right on the money that it's sad that he's one of the few voices actively questioning the lying from this morally lame, incompetent administration. I admire how they're clearly going out of the way to include the far less humorous Kerry in their bipartisan satire.
But Stewart's complaint against Crossfire was handled almost completely without substance. He got in his sound bite, but he never quite got around to backing up his claim that Crossfire's format hurts the country. We can tease out a few suppositions on what he meant by that, but he never really made the case. He failed to do what his show does best--make his audience think.
Clearly li'l Tucker was outmatched in jousting with Jon Stewart. But that's really not that big an accomplishment.

5. "Democracy cannot thrive without a free and honest press" |

I think Jefferson said that. A very prophetic warning indeed.
Jon Stewart is a true patriot, plus he's sexy as hell! :loveya:

4. Stewart is the boy who saw the Emporer had no clothes |
|
his delivery may have been simplistic (and it may have not), but who cares?
There has to be a first voice, even if it is the voice of a child. Now the media has been called out, on national TV.
What are we going to do? Oh I see, we criticize, or minimize, Jon Stewart.
We are so fucked.

He has been very angry with the media for a very long time. He put his career on the line to stand up for our right to an honest, unfiltered, unbiased media.
This was not a stunt.

His critique was that shows like Crossfire cheapen the discourse by choosing political theater over substantive debate. It couldn't have been clearer.
How this is "hurting America" should be all too obvious.

9. A Stunt That's Been Going On For Four Years... |
|
In every interview I've ever read with Jon Stewart he mentions how much he fucking hates shows like Crossfire, which he mentions by name. Yeah, it's a stunt. Next!

10. You're not making sense |

Because Stewart's consistent, it's a stunt? What kind of logic is that? Then you just dismiss everyone with a "next!"???
What makes your unsupported opinion more valuable?

11. "...he never really made the case."? |

You say "He got in his sound bite, but he never quite got around to backing up his claim that Crossfire's format hurts the country."
Well, perhaps he would've been able to "back up" the claim had Tucker actually let him speak instead of constantly interrupting him.
Which in and of itself completely underscored Stewart's claim that the show's format is a joke. Partisan hacks talking over one another in the hopes of landing the best soundbite.
The fact that those two pukes Carville and Novak spent the opening minutes of yesterday's "Crossfire" trashing Stewart only served to illustrate how seriously he rattled their collective cage.
Game. Set. Match. Stewart.

15. Agreed. And, if they spent the same energy and time considering |
|
how to improve their show in response to his comments, that they spend defending the indefensible (and providing more evidence that he's absolutely right), we'd be better off.
It's a shame he had to be so confrontational, but as he said, it didn't seem right to be saying these things on his show while not saying it to them face to face, as uncomfortable as it was to all of them, including Jon. He tried being gentle at first and Begala got defensive, and Carlson simply tried to talk over him and insult him.

13. I consider myself a pretty good judge of sincerity and Stewart was totally |
|
sincere.
He left opportunities for jokes pass so that he could make a sincere point.
His hand was trembling just a little bit because it was so important for him to say things he cared about rather than crack jokes.
He basically said he cares more about what's right for this country than his job (when they were asking him if the show would be better off if Kerry lost). That's patriotism. That's honesty.

17. Begala and Carlson Were Caught With Their Pants Down |
|
Obvioulsy, they expected Stewart to be "their monkey."
Deliver a cute, funny little performance, roast them a bit, then leave.
Both tried to join in the humor for which they thought they had paid. Begala with his opening remark about Bush being unemployed soon, and Carlson's "sniffing his throne"/"buttboy" comment...both were a revelation!
This is what these guys think is the key to Stewarts humor. Begala sees it as purely anti-Bush, Carlson sees at as frat boy rude.
Neither understood that THEY were the fool, that THEY were the jokes. The system, the corporate media. Stewart tried to explain, but they didn't listen.
But I think that by the end, they understood. Based on the latter comments of Carville and Novak, SOMEONE understood.
To claim this as a stunt does a disservice to Stewart and the rest of the Daily Show staff, AND minimizes the sins of the corporate media whores.
Why would anyone on this board want to do that?
