<He may wear civilian clothes now, but retired four star U.S. Army Gen. Wesley Clark still knows how to fire up the troops.
Clark was accompanied on the Kerry campaign trail by U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin, who echoed the general’s criticisms of the Bush administration.
.
Harkin pointed out Clark achieved victory in Kosovo without a single American life lost and with the help of a 19-country coalition.
.
“Too bad President Bush didn’t ask Gen. Clark for advice before going to war in Iraq instead of asking Dick Cheney,” Harkin said.
.
Clark said he and other retired military have an obligation to speak out against misguided foreign policy and war making strategy. He chastised Republicans for attempting to paint anyone who criticizes Bush or the war in Iraq as unpatriotic.
.
“We live in a democracy,” he said. “It’s our duty to look at these issues even during a war. Were we to stop, we’d give up the very thing our men and women in uniform are fighting for. It’s not unpatriotic to speak out. I believe it’s one of the most patriotic things you can do.”>
