tossing together a site/pamphlets, need ideas for best snippets
Edited on Sun Oct-24-04 12:35 AM by freeplessinseattle
to focus on, there is so much I want to use, but have to keep the info fairly brief, succinct, and will make rethugs do a double-take "sheeeit, I didn't know <that>!!" so we whittled it down to 3 issues: war, environment, and economy, with particular emphasis on the economy for obvious reasons, since most rethugs think only with their walllet. So I have all these great articles from "relatively neutral" sources, from the WP, USA Today, and the WSJ (mainly found here on DUthe information goldmine) and think I will choose a few vital sentences from each, with the article link...and want to have two lists a "why Kerry" and Why not Bush?" and have loads of info for both but need to reference the sources for every single thing to be more convincing, so if anyone has a list like that that would be great. Maybe have the lists scrolling slowly...and maybe the dead and wounded scroll from antiwar.com-or would that be too busy with all that scrolling going on? I also love Michael Moore's Day in the Life of Joe Republican, how receptive do you think rethugs would be, or would they maybe feel put on the defensive? I want to make this succinct yet complete as possible..you know, to catch the attention span of the average ADHD voter long enough, and put it in language that is simplistic enough for them to understand....I know it shoudl be a simple project, but when there's so many possibilities I just spin my wheels indefinitely until I finally am pushed to give up on my grand vision and go with the well, something is better than nothing attitude that plagued me throughout college.

*what do you think about including the info about *'s grandad that helped finance Hitler?

1. You might want to include the Supreme Court.
The average term right now is 18 years, and Nixon's appointment of Rehnquist in 1971 shows that a President's bad (or GOOD) decisions can be with us for the following 30 years in court rulings.

2. yess! thank you, that is just the type of thing I'm looking for
things to make people go "aiyyiyi!!"

there are infinite reasons why * should not be elected, it boggles my mind that people can find even one good reason to choose him..so I need the most high impact, not thought about too much, bits such as this. thank you thank you thank you! god, wish I had done this earlier, but oh well, I'll try to saturate every swing state as much as I can with banner exchanges, and hit the counties north of Seattle's King County with flyers galore midweek. been doing that with the fantastic flyers made available here, now just trying to whip together some pamphlets and the site could really make an impact. I'd love to share the finished product with DU readers, but hope our somewhat sneaky method of attracting readers is not frowned on. let's just say that in a way I am ripping off the "weapons of mass seduction" idea from the liesgirls. site that was posted in the lounge...hey, whatever it takes to attract attention to the vital info that needs to be seen!

3. Get this..
Conservatives
William H Rehnquist - nominated by Nixon in 1971

Antonin Scalia - nominated by Reagan in 1986

Clarence Thomas - nominated by Bush I in 1991

==========

Moderates
Sandra Day O'Connor - nominated by Reagan in 1981

Anthony M Kennedy - nominated by Reagan in 1988

==========

Liberals
John Paul Stephens - nominated by Ford in 1975

David Hackett Souter - nominated by Bush I in 1990

Ruth Bader Ginsburg - nominated by Clinton in 1993

Stephen Breyer - nominated by Clinton in 1994

==========

The average term currently served? Over 18 YEARS.

And people are only living longer and longer.. so a Supreme Court appointment will have more potential to live even longer in the future.

==========

Why the Supreme Court Matters

In terms of having "the final word" on policy in D.C., the U.S. Supreme Court is The Ultimate. Checks on this branch of government are the weakest of all three, making the court the most powerful branch in many experts' eyes.

And let's face it.. if a law that is anything near "controversial," it WILL be challenged in court. If an executive order or action is unliked, it will be challenged in court. If an elections official tries to get, umm, "creative" with the law, it will be challenged in court.

Women's rights, environmental policy, workers' rights, international policy, election policy, gay rights, landowners' rights, privacy rights, speech rights, medical rights.. if it's remotely controversial, SOMEONE WILL CHALLENGE IT.

Having the final say on all of these issues is the very best insurance that we can have in cases where a nasty crowd comes-into power in Washington. When you put a checkmark or fill an oval next to the Presidential candidate's name, you're not just voting for that one person.. you're also potentially voting for decades of decision-making at the highest levels of government.

5. No problem!
It's from an old post of mine that I saved onto my computer. If there's one issue over which to be a single-issue voter, it's this.. because in effect, this issue covers all others.

Cheers!

8. thank you! Seattle is a special place for sure!
It's the rest of the state I'm worried about! I'm heading up to my freeperville hometown in a few days though, which has a surprisingly high ratio of Kerry to * signs, from the areas I've seen, maybe the Canadian common sensical influence helps!

7. Ashcroft and his war on sexuality/sex industry/statues??
any relevent info would be extremely helpful, I'm partly tartgetinga a certain demographic that is affected by Ashcroft et al., and don't even make the connection-they need some help doing so, in a way that can absorb quickly and easily. Thanks in advance, I appreciate it, I know this is so last minute but am acting on a dormant brainstorm as quickly as I can and can refine it during the week.
