BACK OFF ON THE PLAIN DEALER -- IMPORTANT!!!!! |
|
From the K/E campaign:
I just heard from the paper that they are NOT endorsing tomorrow. They are holding off for this weekend. This is a big big victory for us that we got them to delay.
Our guidance is that we NOT do anything inflamatory with the paper. It most definitely will backlash.
---
So if you are writing/calling the PD or are thinking about it, hold off!!!!!!

... their editorial board wants to endorse Kerry but their publisher is commanding them to endorse Bush.

8. Cincinnati is a right wing haven. |
|
Cleveland is generally more Dem friendly. I've been thinking it was Columbus that was the linchpin of the state.
I don't know why the Plain Dealer is so important.

11. The Plain Dealer has a huge circulation all over mid-Ohio |
|
It's also more even-handed than the Columbus Dispatch, which is a crappy paper that totally toes the Republican line.
The main reason this is important is freedom of the press. If editorial boards (already conservative) are overruled by publishers (totally beholden to advertisers' dollars) then we have lost a free press.
I'll hold off but I am watching carefully. If the PD endorses * I am going to be furious. I grew up in Ohio reading the PD.

10. My folks in Ohio get the Plain Dealer. |
|
And they'll probably be disguisted if the PD endorses Bush. My gramma is busting her butt for the Dem party in her small town. As a matter of fact, 99% of my family up in NE Ohio are Dems, except for my fundie mom who just went back up there. She told me she registered as Dem, btw, but I suspect she'll vote for Bush. It would be ironic if she were one of the Dems harrassed by the 'pubs at the polls. She hasn't been in Ohio 30 days yet, either, so her right to vote could be contested, and it would be one less vote for Bush. Even so, I don't condone this and I hope these brownshirts get exactly what they deserve because people are PISSED this year. They'd better watch it.

14. The Plain Dealer is a Newhouse paper |
|
Edited on Sun Oct-24-04 05:15 PM by LiberalEsto
just like the Newark Star-Ledger in NJ, which DID endorse Kerry today.
Newhouse papers are fairly independent, editorially. So just because the Star-Ledger and another Newhouse paper, the Trenton Times, went for Kerry, it doesn't mean that the Plain Dealer or others will.
The New Orleans Times-Picayune, another Newhouse paper, decided not to endorse either candidate this year. In 2000, they endorsed B*sh.
