The Battefield shrinks: Bush pulling out of Maine, Kerry pulling out of CO
http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/news/politics/10005599.htm

Both candidates are all but abandoning their bids to pick up a state that went to the other side four years ago. The Republican incumbent is scaling back advertising in the historically Democratic state of Maine, while the Democratic challenger is not slated to run any TV commercials in GOP-leaning Colorado this week.

Bush has been trying to make a play for Maine, but strategists for both campaigns say Kerry holds the edge there, so it makes sense for the president to divert resources to more competitive states. The Republican is only running a trickle of ads in that state, which Gore won by 5 percentage points.

Kerry's campaign has canceled plans for him to visit Colorado on Tuesday and is scheduled to pull its ads from the state this week, although the Democratic National Committee is to remain on the air there.

Polls show the race close in Colorado, where Bush won by 9 percentage points in 2000, but not close enough for a Democrat to win, especially when so many swing states are in play.

What The Kerry/Edwards Campaign Told The Media Today

I was given the chance just now to listen in on the weekly “Week Ahead” conference call between the Kerry/Edwards campaign and the national media. Here are some highlights:

After some opening remarks, Tad Devine and Joe Lockhart fielded questions from the media. Joe Lockhart said that the overall theme for this final week would be that we need a president who can defend the country and fight for the middle class. The final round of paid media, of which there are three final TV spots now in rotation in the swing states, will make the case that Kerry will not only fight the war on terror, he will simultaneously grow good jobs, get health care under control and deal with rising costs, and develop alternate energy sources.

18. I always thought Arkansas was a better target than Colorado
Regardless of state polls. Recent history indicates Colorado has been trending GOP via new transplants more than can be overcome this cycle by hispanics and new registers. Before seeing this thread I posted an hour ago we had almost no chance in Colorado.

I really wish we would contest any semi-feasible state. There has to be some type of diminished return for saturation.

19. I wouldn't call Maine - "historically Dem"
It was rock solid GOP in Prez Elections for many years. I think the endorsement of former Gov Angus King (Ind) was big there.
