In fact if the same oercentages of Republicans and Democrats turn out, and the same percentages of cross party voting occur as they usually do, a republican could never be elected to the presidency. In order for a Republican to win, given the numerical superiority of Democrats, and the tendency of more independents to vote Democrat than Republican, the only way a Republican can win is if they somehow do something to prevent Democrats from voting.
In the last three elections, the average percent of Democrats who voted was 38 percent and the average amount of Republicans who voted was 35 percent. The rest were independents. From the results of the 2000 election, with Gore winning the popular vote, it is obvious that more Democrats voted than Republicans. Republicans are freaking out because in spite of everything, far more new Democrats have have already voted in the early elections than was expected. Something like 8 percent more Dems have voted in the early votung states than was expected from predictions based on past elections. The higher the voter turnout, the more everything favors Kerry, which is why Repubicans , including high level Republican officials, are very worried about this election. If fact, if Democrats and Republicans regitered exactly the same amounts of new voters, they would still not be able to win if the Democrats were coming out in the higher percentages that they are now coming out in. From the beginning of this race, the Republican strategy has been to try to keep as many Democrats as voting as possible, as without that, they cannot win. Ever. If they were sure that they could win by other methods, they would not be so desperately trying to get so many newly registered democrats removed from the rolls. This is why Democrats also have so many lawyers who will be stationed all over the place making sure that Republican pollworkers do not prevent Democrats from voting, and will be immediately ready to contest any attempt to disenfranchise any Democratic voter. So far they have not been very successful in removing any voters from the rolls, In Duval County, they tried using forms that required people to fill in the same infomations in multiple places on the voters registration form. That is that there were two places where a voter wassupposed to sign an affirmation that they were a U.S. citizen. There were a things of s similar nature duplicated on the forms. The Republican Supervisor of Elections tried to remove over a thousand voters from the rolls in a test run for later in the election season and was snagged big time. He was required to reinstate those voters (750 were Dem 250 Republican , approximately) . Because he failed to put this one over on the Democrats of the county, he resigned and retired as he could not accept the fact that he was not going to be able to pull a fast one and give Bush the election as he did in 2000 when he disenfranchised 27,000 voters by throwing out their votes based on the same prinipal, claiming that the voters were not qualified to vote based on a techincality in filling out their VR forms. This is why he didnt get into trouble for simply throwing out the votes so they could not be part of the recount when he found there was going to be a recount. Had they simply been votes in which there was some question about the actual vote (hanging chad stuff) he would not have been able to get rid of the ballots, and they would have had to be included in the count. His method could not be used this time, as Dems caught onto it early. Republicans in Seminole County are already trying to use the same techincality to get rid of 14,000 early Democratic votes, but they will likwly not succeed, as the Duval case has already set a legal precedent. If the person signed only one of the places in which there was redundant questioning on the forms, not filling out the second place is not valid reason for disenfranching the voter as he has already answered the questions in their first response. So affirming in one place on a form that one IS a U.S. citizen is enough, and if they did not fill out the second place where they wre to affirm citizenship, the courts ruled that a person could not be taken off the VR lists for that reason. So the Repukes are not likely to win the Seminole County removals either. The more times we prevent them from removing people from lists for reasons of redundancies on forms, the less able they will be to remove other voters from the lists for the same reasons.
