Poll question: Who would be a better UN secretary general? Clinton or Bush |
|
The job by tradition rotates around the continents. And North America has a turn coming up. When Kerry is elected, who better to suggest for UN secretary general than Clinton, who is quite popular around the world and would make a fabulous secretary general.
OTOH, nominating Bush would be richly ironic. He'd find out first-hand just what the rest of the world thought about him. Plus, if he actually got the job he'd have to learn how to work constructively with the rest of the world. He'd have to drop the swaggering cowboy BS.

3. Clinton'd be great, but... |
|
Isn't it the case that none of the permanent Security Council members can serve as Secretary General?
Means it won't be anyone from the US.

Might be right, though I have read several articles in the past suggesting Clinton as Sec. gen.

7. That has been all over the internets, but no one seems to be able to |
|
cite any authority for it. I have read the UN Charter and some other documents on the UN website and was not able to find any such limitation.

"How is the Secretary-General appointed? The Secretary-General is appointed by the General Assembly, on the recommendation of the Security Council. The Secretary-General's selection is therefore subject to the veto of any of the five permanent members of the Security Council. ... Although there is technically no limit to number of five-year terms a Secretary-General may serve, none so far has held office for more than two terms. "

I can think of nothing more humiliating for junior than to have President Kerry consult with George H W Bush on international issues. It would be an olive branch to moderate Republicans and a rebuke to the neoCons.

8. LOL. But then that would mean that junior would want to be |
|
Secretary General when he grows up.

9. Maybe instead of secretary general |
|
Bush could be appointed UN envoy to Iraq -- and set up his office in Fallujah.
