GOTV fun
I have been doing lots of voter registration this past summer. Mostly tabling at local grocery stores, but I also registered a few smaller groups. One of the groups I registered consisted of several young women at a local residential program. I have been calling for the past few weeks, trying to set up a time to take them to early voting. So last night at 8pm, someone finally gets back to me, says, well they want to vote tomorrow. And, of course, I am completely slammed. So my husband has to take the afternoon off work to drive these young women to vote. It is raining. Lines are long. We are cranky about it.

So my husband called later and says, it was worth it. When the young women checked in to vote, the poll workers announce 'first time voters' and everyone at the polls gave them a standing O. They got back to the residence, and they were jumping up and down, talking to their friends, saying 'I voted, it was great, everyone was so nice. OMG!!! You have to vote!'

And I want to point out, these are the unlikeliest of voters, no way they are counted in any poll. And they all pulled the straight ticket. :-)

2. That's so great!
My daughter was excited too, first time voter. Of course, we have mail-in, so no standing O. But she says her and all her friends are so excited about voting, they're feeling the power! It's terrific. Big hug for the DH, coming through in a pinch!

6. I wish I had been there to see the standing O.
I probably would have kissed the poll workers for being so cool. But they are probably democracy junkies, too. And hubby deserves more than just a hug. He is great about supporting my activism. Plus, he really hates bush, too.

7. Hard work, yes.
But we have a really tight senate race, in addition to the prez. So the GOTV is really the most important thing right now. Gotta support Erskine, as well as Kerry/Edwards.

But what also made me happy today was thinking that we had probably helped create lifetime voters. Now they have voted, so it is not a new experience. And it was also positive experience. So likely they will repeat it. Not that we did it all. The young women actually did the heavy lifting. But you know what I mean. :-)
