the undecided have already made up their minds about bush - that's why they're undecided. Kerry just has to convince them he is the one to vote for.

In this case though, it's just the honest truth. Undecided votes always favor the challenger, and it's completely logical. If the incumbent was doing a good job, they wouldn't BE undecided in the first place.
I don't have any percentages handy, but I don't recall a large undecided vote in 1996. Wonder why?
