My priest all but said VOTE KERRY today |
|
Talked about poverty as the root of abortion and sin and said it was in "our hands" to defeat it. Kept mentioning "policies" of countries.

1. While I am happy you have an intelligent priest, I am sorry |
|
that he would inflict himself into the political game. Of course, the RW has no such compunction.

7. Fair enough, I wasn't there |
|
and if he kept the rhetoric away from Kerry's name them its cool.
I mean, personally, I think there shouldn't be politics in the pulpit. Its a fine line between social issue and Christian stances and politics. I'd have to say with your clarification and my more careful reading () that you are right, he was cool.

Fighting poverty is a primary tenet of Roman Catholicism. It destroys lives and leaves people vulnerable to crime, drugs, divorce, depression, illness and many other adversities. It certainly could be argued that some women who are poverty-stricken get abortions for that reason, but by no means all. (It's not the only reason for the other items, either, obviously).
The point being that some people are perfectly happy keeping a segment of our population in poverty, because they are more likely to be disenfranchised from their government, less likely to vote or be empowered in any way. And those people typically are Republicans who have power and want to keep it that way.
And yes, it's up to the people to be active in our government and help people rise from poverty, not descend into it.
Cheers to the priest. As long as he did not endorse a candidate specifically, he was not out of line (IRS-wise).

4. Good a priest with some sense---he can see the roots |
|
of "sin" are not simply selfishness or carelessnes but often "sinners" of all kinds are driven by desperation.
(quotes because I am presenting the RC definition of abortion, not my own)

6. You can be pro-life and critical of Catholics |
|
but IMHO one thing that USED to separate Catholics from the right wing fundies was a holistic view of the Culture of Life. They thought abortion was wrong but said: what about poverty, injustice, healthcare? These are just as much a part of a "culture of life" as being anti-abortion. And then the war thing has to be setting very poorly with many Catholics. It seemed that Catholics started to change about 10 years ago, becoming single issue anti-abortion. Maybe Bush has helped them understand what "The other half" of the "Christians" are really like.

9. A Catholic vote for bush is a Vote for Falwell.... |
|
Catholics cannot vote for rich tel-evangelical politicians. Falwell is one of the most dangerous man in the US. Vote Kerry for Freedom of Religion.

10. Catholic clerics for Bu$h are largely responsible for the rapid decline |
|
Edited on Sun Oct-31-04 01:19 PM by Zorra
in the numbers of catholics throughout the world. It is good to see catholic priests coming out against insanity. You'd think the catholic clergy would have learned that it is not a good idea to support fascists like Bu$h by now. http://www.nobeliefs.com/nazis.htm

12. Here is a Letter to the Editor I wrote |
|
It is in todays paper....Just got a phone call from a lady who goes to our Church...she called to say thank you....because of this letter she will be voting for Kerry...she had previously made up her mind not to vote at all....
Don't be a one issue voter.....
I am a Catholic....I do not believe in Abortion, simply for the sake of Abortion...What bothers me is why do so many believe they have been chosen to make these decisions for others. Do you really believe God isn't up to the job?
I also do not believe God wants us to neglect children who are hungry, without homes, without health care...many of whom are left behind because "No Child Left Behind Act" was under funded....
Some things to consider:
Stem cell research can save lives...the same way organ transplants do. My 14 month old grandson died due to an auto accident his organs were donated...4 children got a second chance at life...how can anyone deny a dying child?
What good will we do if we let those lines of stem cells go to waste...What if it were your child who needed help....Would you be willing to say it's ok let my child die, stem cell research is wrong....
The embryos used in this research are "leftovers" typically coming from couples who have banked them at fertility clinics and then voluntarily released them for research. The great promise of embryonic stem sells, as opposed to adult stem cells, is that they have the potential to grow into whatever types of cells the body might require even muscular, beating cells of a heart.
The 60 embryonic stem cell lines that Bush OK'd three years ago for federally funded research have almost reached the limits of their usefulness. Many did not pan out at all. This has tied the hands of researchers.
The great irony is that everything opponents fear could come true if it continues to be driven into unregulated private laboratories...
Since neither John Kerry or Bush support same sex marriages, why do republicans continue to try to make it an issue? Are you that hung up on other peoples sex lives? Is this the way you get your kicks?
