Early voters: Are you seeing young people turning up at the polls?
Edited on Mon Nov-01-04 07:28 PM by Polly Glot
I'm in Ohio and we don't have early voting. Given that this election hinges so critically on young adults getting out to vote, are these folks showing up in good numbers at the polls?

Apologies in advance if this has been brought up before.

ON EDIT: Title didn't make sense...

1. I took my husband to early vote today in Indiana and
the Dem poll worker there said she has seen ALOT of young people early voting....just a small town perspective.

2. I think so.
We have it here in Texas. There is an early voting station on the UT campus. Business was light at first when voting opened on the 18th, but increased each day. Friday was the last day, and the line wrapped around the building. The wait was over an hour. Kerry should win with the UT students, but the margin will be far from unanimous. A lot of DFW/Houston area white suburbanites on campus too. Early voting in Travis County (Austin and area) is way up over 2000.

3. Good Mix in NC
There was a very good mix in the immediate people around me.

In High Point, NC, there was a middle-aged asian immigrant, a 20-something black male, a 50-something black woman, a 40-something white woman, a 20-something white woman and me, a 28 yr white male.

Then of course there was the jamacian immimgrant with 4 kids who let them run amok during the entire 2h 45m wait. :|

4. I saw a bunch of college students today
I had to go to City Hall to check on something at the Elections Office (I'm a poll worker). The crowd was very large and there were lots of young people.

Both parties have been running shuttles back and forth to campus for the last week or so, and I think a lot of students have taken advantage of it. One young man interviewed on TV tonight said that voting early made it so he didn't have to worry about missing class by standing in long lines.

The woman I talked to in the Elections Office said they'd had 800 people vote at City Hall last Friday. That's huge for this town. It's also the only early-voting site in the city.

6. I was stunned at the young crowd when I voted in Las Vegas last Thursday
The line was 200 strong at 8:30 PM and the average age had to be mid-20s. I posted a thread on DU immediately.

9. In Tallahassee, home of two universities, young people are
the largest voting bloc in the county. They increased that number by 11,000+ new registrations.
The supervisor of elections has said there is an overwhelming turnout here! He said a lot of people are going to be very surprised Wednesday morning!

11. Cool!
The few times I've been able to watch the news it's been pretty much just older folk. Nothing wrong with that, of course, I'm just looking to measure the motivation factor of our youth and haven't seen it reflected in the mainstream media much.
