Poll question: Have YOU ever voted Republican?
I've never voted for a Republican my entire life. That's every election since 1980. I can't really foresee that changing.

I'll have to admit I'm not a "Yellow Dog" Democrat either; I'll either not vote for a Dem who hasn't earned my vote or I'll vote third party to make a statement. Guess I'm a Green Dog. I'm definitely behind THIS ticket 100%.

How about you? Have YOU ever voted Republican?

2. I have my problems with the Democrats, but...
I have never once in my life cast a vote for anybody other than a Democrat.

Today, in my highly Republican suburb of Chicago, there was a REpublican running unopposed in one local race. I cast no vote in that race and will make certain that in the next election, no Republican will run unopposed even if I have to run myself!

it was fun but exhausting and VERY expensive. We are currently writing my brother in for a race in which the Republican is running unopposed. Find someone for a number of people to write in. Make a statement.

Still, I'd just as soon scrap the seniority system so that I could feel free to vote for whomever.

11. I'm from the northeast. There's a long, although
seemingly quiet for the moment, history of liberal republicans here. I was quite proud to vote for Lowell Weicker instead of Joe Lieberman for Senate back in '88. I'd do that again in a heartbeat.

It's important to look beyond party affiliation to positions and character. Would I vote for any republican, no matter how liberal, if I thought he/she would kowtow to the Bush line? No way. But I always look beyond the little designation next to the name.

In 96 I had well over 20 different positions to vote for, so after the 'main spots' I voted for the woman candidate. If both were women I voted for the democrat, but there were a few positions (all local) that I voted for the republican woman candidate.

51. Why do I vote Repub?
Because no one gets my vote for free. The one race in particular where I voted Repub, I researched the candidates. The Repub broke about 50-50 with my views on issues; some good, some bad.

The Dem didn't have a website as far as I could tell. No link from the local Party website, no interviews with newspapers. My point is this: If the guy doesn't even bother to try to get his message out, he'll be no better at communicating with his constituency when he's in office.

In this case, the Repub got my vote.

25. Never voted for a Republican
Not out of partisan loyalty to the Democrats, but rather as a rejection of the Republican party platform and almost anybody who would stand by it. There have been a number of Republicans that I have respected, perhaps even bore qualities that I admired, but I still wouldn't vote for them.

I think any man or woman that someone like me found acceptable would have a mighty hard time in the Republican party.

In 88 and 94. In 2000, I abstained on the Senate vote. I was protesting the impeachment, but I still didn't want to vote against him.

Apart from that, I've voted for a Republican for governor (once), and probably for two or three local offices. I've voted for more Greens than Republicans in my lifetime!

And this year was my first straight Democratic ticket!

Youthful indiscretion.

I didn't get to vote for a congressman today because there was no Democrat running against him. I might have to run against him myself in 2006 -- just so people can vote for a Democrat if they want.

Voted against Sen. Richard Shelby today even though the Democrat running against him is one of those perennial losers. Maybe he's running just so folks like me don't have to hold our noses and vote for Shelby.

49. Voted for Arne Carlson as Governor of Minnesota
Moderate Republican; good man. Still don't regret it one bit. Our Dem candidate was a piece of shit.

And I'm a lifelong Democrat all the way! When I was five, I met Hubert H Humphrey at the Minnesota State Fair and told my parents he was a good man.

They made me cry by voting for NIXON! AAAAAUUUUGGGGHHH!!!

They repented by voting Democratic ever since.

Again, I would vote for a decent moderate Republican over a shithead Dem, but otherwise have stayed true.

I also voted for Jessie Ventura for MN Governor, (ironically against HHH's son "Skip," who is NOT a chip off the old block) and I still don't regret that, although I wasn't happy about Ventura's posturing about the Wellstone memorial service in 2002.

THAT election was fucked anyway.

59. I voted for a republican prosecutor today
I thought the office needed a clean sweep from the previous prosecutor's staff. The previous prosecutor resigned while being investigated for taking election funds from someone he gave a plea bargain to in a rape case. The dem running was one of his assistants. The republican comes from a well-respected family in the county's legal system, has a good reputation for ethics and more private sector experience than the dem, which I think sometimes makes for a better prosecutor than someone who has only worked in the prosecutor's office.

I voted for John McCain in the Michigan primary in 2000, but I had no plan to vote for him in November. I voted for him for two reasons:

1. I feared a Bush presidency and that really bad things would happen if he got into office (I was right).
2. To make former Gov. Engler look bad for not being able to deliver Michigan to his buddy Bush.

I am happy to say that I have NEVER, EVER voted for a Republican in any election since I've been voting age (1988).

However, I have not always voted for the Democratic candidate, either... (voted Green in 1996 & 2000 in a safe blue state, but not this year).

64. never in my life
I came of age during the Nixon reign and lost some good friends because of him. He made the promise/lie that he would end the war if reelected but instead invaded Cambodia and Laos. I predicted that he would be found out and thrown out before Watergate hit the news, like Gorgy Jr you could see how crooked and dangerous he was- that made me into a die-hard Democrat. Poor old Ford played one too many football games without a helmet, Reagan was a lovable buffoon but not for me, Bush I was a non lovable buffoon and Jr is all of the above!
There is one thing about a repuk politician, they never tell the truth.

PS: I did get a chance to vote for the 2 greatest presidents in the past 35 years; that is JIMMY CARTER and BILL CLINTON. Oh I forgot almost, make that 3- JOHN KERRY.

I check party affiliations even for mosquito-control candidates....no repukes now or ever get my vote, and I have been voting since the 1960's.

68. I voted for Rudy in NYC--what a mistake
He was great in his first term, IMHO, bipartisan and inclusive. He even endorsed Mario Cuomo over George Pataki for governor. But during his second term, the ugly Rudy took over and Abner Louima, Amadou Diallo, and Patrick Dorismond, along with Rudy's shameless support of abusive cops and equally shameless put-downs of their innocent victims, put a whole new face on his administration. He was pro-cop only as long as it advanced his own agenda and didn't mean putting money where his mouth was in the form of higher pay and better benefits. His run-ins with Housing Works and his boasts about how he made legitimate Food Stamps requests drown in paperwork are legendary, as are his erection of Fort City Hall for "security" purposes and his wars on squeegee men and even jaywalkers.

I'll stop there, but I remain sorry for having given him a platform to become "America's Mayor" after 9/11, a title he doesn't deserve. And listening to him mouth off against Kerry on the Sunday talk shows only rubbed salt into the wound. He'll say anything and do anything, no scruples attached. Talk of him being a moderate is plain wrong. He's a soldier in the GOP mob, and that speaks for itself.

I voted Republican ONCE.................
and that was for my Dad who was running for County Court Judge around 1966. I moved out of the district after that and have never done it since. So you see, it was a "family thing", I kind of had to do it. I have never soiled myself since then pulling a Republican lever.

69. Yes, back in my younger days I voted for Ford. I really kind of liked him.
I still do. I don't think of him as a bad repub. I'm not real sure who the Democrat was in that race.

Also, back in the 2000 primary I voted repub. so that I could vote against *. I voted for McCain because I hated * even then. Hated him from the moment I saw him. I'm from Ohio and didn't really know that much about him prior to those primaries. But anyway, I didn't realize that by asking for a repub ballot in the Ohio primary that I'm then registered as a repub. I couldn't figure out how I was then getting all of these weird repub phone calls, mail etc. The BOE set me straight and I fixed that as soon as I could at the next primary. It drove me crazy just knowing that I was officially registered as a repub. YUCK!!

72. Me, too. I voted for Ford in '76
partly because I was still under the influence of my Republican parents and partly because I liked him. But then I voted for Carter in '80. That's when I began forming my OWN opinions (much to the dismay of my parents!)

Unfortunately, that put me on the losing side of two elections in a row, followed by '84 and '88. FINALLY, in '92 and '96, I got to vote for a WINNER! Add today and my percentages are increasing! :D

75. My parents & grandparents were FDR Democrats
...and they all would be turning in their graves if I ever voted Republican. I have voted green before. As a liberal, I was feeling very betrayed by the Democratic Party for a while. I can only hope that the Party will not forget it's liberal roots & that it has always been the party of the people, not the party of Big Businesses.

I remember the joy I had during the Democratic Party convention in 1976. Looking through the crowd I saw faces of all the many different people that make up this country. The faces were of my people, and I was proud to be a member of the party. I hadn't felt that way until this past Democratic Party convention.

87. In a "lesser of two evils" situation in a state/county/local race . . .
. . . I've voted GOP a couple of times. If there's a good third-party option, I'll go for him/her.

I've NEVER voted for a Republican for president, however.

THIS TIME, I voted the straight Democratic line. And I will continue to do so as long as the entire GOP seems to want to align itself with the neocon agenda.

88. I voted for a church member who was forced to run as a repuke...
..when she first ran for office, her opponent was an AWFUL democrat, so she ran against him in the general election.

I told her that I was disturbed that I had to vote for a republican for the first time in my life! She laughed, and said, "you don't have to vote for me at all - I'm unopposed this year!"

I voted for her anyways.

90. I have in local elections though I would never vote Republican
for president of the United States. In my mind, he should be seen as a uniter and defender of all of us, not a select minority, which obviously the Republicans have a habit of ignoring when attempting to vote in laws..

For you freepers, if it were not for people like us here, "Liberals" and proud of it, you would not still be having the freedom to continue to use this interent as well as other avenues of freedoms we still retain regardless of how Bush's patriot act has tried to limit some...

People should thank us for getting this worm out of our nations highest office, and don't forget to keep at Rove, the little weasel will never give up, he should forever have someone watching him...

Actually, the only Rep that I ever voted for was for a local sheriff running for Justice of The Peace. He was a great character and I was saddened he didn't make another term...very fair and caring, they are not all bad...just need guidance every now and then..

91. My Presidential Votes

Primary/General

1980 - Bush/Carter
1984 - Glenn*/Mondale
1988 - Kennedy*/Bush
1992 - Clinton/Clinton
1996 - Clinton/Clinton
2000 - Gore/Gore
2004 - Dean/Kerry**

* I voted for Ted Kennedy in one primary and John Glenn in another. But I don't remember which, so I may have gotten these turned around.

**I have voted at the same polling place for thirteen years. Despite having a 90+% turnout of registered voters most of those times, I had never encountered a line ... until this morning. So I didn't get to vote this morning, but will be voting Kerry in a couple hours.

94. Proud Yellow Dog Democrat here. Trust me. I have never been wrong
when picking the best candidate.

That should be obvious to the entire world right now; if everyone always voted Dem, we would have no republicans in office, and the world would be a beautiful, happy, clean, prosperous place to live for everyone.

Every vote cast for a republican is a vote cast for corruption and destruction.

Always vote straight ticket Democrat.

The country you save will be your own.
