My suggestion: Let some of the right wing agenda pass. |
|
The electorate must be reminded clearly just how wrong the right wing is.
Telling them isn't enough.
They have to see and feel it.

.... not to belabor the obvious, but we really have no choice. They have the Senate, the House, and our Senate filibuster margin is a tool that only works in certain situations.
Don't worry, you'll get your wish. We might be able to block the most extreme judgeship appointments, but other than that we are hamstrung.
But, that said I agree with you and have said so many times here. Other than the Supreme Court, I can live with whatever bullshit they pull - simply so the deluded idiots called Americans can get what they asked for. The sooner, the better IMHO.
We are like a country hooked on dope. Our family (the Dems) keep trying to mount an intervention, but we just haven't hit rock bottom enough to realize how deep our troubles are. It won't take long now. :(

3. In 93 they were able to stop a lot of Clinton's agenda. |

They were in the same place as we were.

... but they are Republicans and we're Democrats.
They are willing to get in the dirt and our party still is not.
I honestly believe that Bush** will get just about every legislative initiative he asks for. We'll just have to wait and see.

Repug majority on Governerships, Judges, House and Senate, it certainly will not take long.

... as a form of going on record against the policy, on that I agree.
All I'm arguing here is how effective our resistance will be at actually preventing legislation. I say it won't be effective at all.

|
They'll still blame us and the idiotic red staters will believe them. Hell, they prop themselves up as protectors of social security to get the old vote after they (conservatives) opposed it tooth and nail back when it was passed. And enough people buy it to screw us.

When gas prices skyrocket, they'll blame Democrats for not allowing drilling in ANWR sooner and for blocking Bush's energy bill in the first term.
When terrorists hit us again, they'll blame Clinton for not taking Osama's head when the Sudan offered it to him 3 times. The Religious Right will blame gay marriage for the terror attacks.
When things go badly in Iraq, they'll blame John Kerry for voting against the $87 billion.
When their jobs are outsourced to China or India, they'll blame Democrats for not allowing deeper cuts in the corporate tax or the income tax for the wealthy.

7. So... the 'give 'em enough rope to hang themselves with' approach |
|
Let 'em do themselves in.
BTW: History shows that second terms tend to be pretty rough for incumbents. Look at FDR, Truman, LBJ, Nixon, Reagan and Clinton. Hopefully they'll be begging for our guy in 2008.

11. all Dems can do is harrass and skirmish around the edges |
|
the core of Bush's wild ideas in second term ARE GOING TO PASS. Of course Dems will go on record with their objections....but this will be quite a fine kettle of fish before it's all said and done.
Just not very hopeful about progress in senate in the midterms.

... they like the anti-gay, anti-abortion, anti, anti, anti crap, but they haven't a glimmer of a clue just how tenuous our economy is at the present time.
They didn't know that in order to get their "moral" appetites satisfied, it would cost them their economic well-being.
As I've said elsewhere, I'll do ok, and frankly I'm done caring about them in any form or fashion.

17. I think they already feel it, media keeps telling them it isn't because |
|
of the right though and they believe it.
They are being fed that their problems are being caused by the only people who are actually trying to help them. I thought people would have got it by now but the media is just too powerful a source of influence.
What I cannot believe no one has cried foul louder on is that the exit polls being used by the media are all the same source and employed/paid for by all the BIG media. I will always cry foul on this election and hopefully the freedom of information act inquiries into the electronic machines in OH will give us the proof. Doubt it though.

and I have to agree, give the country what it evidently wants. Since the Democrats have no significance in the house now, they should let all the right wing agenda pass with no vote for or against the bill. They can stop nothing by voting so why vote. Let the right wing take the entire credit, or blame, for the repercussions. Edit: change right wind to right wing but what's the diff?

20. I see your point, but you've forgotten |
|
something very important.
Democrats have to resist the agenda or they won't be able to say we offer an alternative.
What I mean is, for example, that no democrat can vote for social security privatization. It undermines our ability to tell the electorate we're better.
The medicare prescription drug bill, for instance, had support from some Democrats. It made it hard to criticize Bush for it because he could say it had bipartisan support.
The agenda will pass, but we must resist it.

I did my job, I got out and worked for Kerry and Dems. I wrote letters to my Congress people, registered voters, knocked on doors, worked the polls here in America's WANG (Florida)for my candidates and their policies. Wangers want the Bush Baby and his cronies? Well, they got him and when they see their Social Security cut by 1/3 and they lose their Medicare and their Health Care Costs skyrocket, they can write the letters and carry the signs and protest, if they want. They are so entrenched by fear and intolerance and stupidity that they can't see past the lies and the right wing agenda that will only hurt them.
Perhaps in two years I will feel the need to get out and work for my candidates again, but for right now, I think the Dems in Congress should do the work. They should resist the Rethugs, get defeated as they will and carry the burden of informing the electorate on their own shoulders instead of putting it on mine.
Its me first Baby!!!

23. Like it or not, you share the burden. |
|
You have a duty to speak up when you see something wrong.
It's as simple as that.
No one is expecting you to make phone calls and knock on doors right now. But you can still write a letter to the editor.
The Republicans built their base BETWEEN the elections, not during an election year. That's what your mission is now.
Evil triumphs when good people do nothing.
