Quickie Bible study, even if you despise religion, on the Pharisees.

Learn it, discuss it, know it, repeat it, loudly and often.

Use the word at every opportunity; let's see them argue out of this.

Matthew 23:14
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.

Matthew 23:23
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

From the Blue Letter Bible, btw.

I had sworn that I would try never to mix matters of state and my Christian beliefs, but in this case, both are at stake.

Arm yourselves with knowledge.

Vigilance.

I have had these same feelings ever since Tuesday. We are in the thick of it, fellow DUers.

4. If there were ever a reason for me to leave this Country, religious
nut cases would be it. Atheists don't fly plane into buildings, Atheists don't run around the globe starting holy wars and Atheists don't persecute someone based on a belief of a particular brand of invisible sky person. This is crap and I for one am sick of being subjected to religious nut jobs who think everyone should fall in line with their delusions or be exterminated. Count me out!

8. It's a TALKING POINT, no more, no less.
Don't let anger blind you to what's happening. I'm on TBE's and your side.

The point is, they CALL themselves Christians, they define THEMSELVES that way, which is precisely the modus operandi of the Pharisees.

Call them on that, and let them explain why they AREN'T.

They simply can't do it without CONTRADICTING THE BIBLE.

I was just making the point people have been raising this issue and quoting the Sermon on the Mount for 2,000 years, and yet here we are.

7. The scribes and the Pharisees are the enemy?
Edited on Sun Nov-07-04 02:48 PM by Marianne
I thought the both cheeks were to be offered instead of curses and threats of damnation .

and as I understand it, the serpent is related to them Pharisees and scribes?

Are they relatives of the Jews that we know today? Or did they die out, their DNA being spent?

12. An organization to contact ministries within the US
I couldn't agree more, blondeatleast. I am not a Christian because I don't follow the OT prophecies, but I have faith in the word of Jesus. In my opinion, the current situation with the 'religious right' is a massive, sad misunderstanding that is only harming them.

I would like to propose that we coordinate a national effort to reach out to Christian religious leaders on a local basis. I would be willing to organize a list of volunteers, including where they live, what denomination they are, which pastors they personally know locally.

Over the long run, many of us talking about the same news in the same terms on the same day will multiply. When two pastors we touch call each other with the same questions, we will win a small battle for peace and truth.

Anybody who is interested in putting a little time and thought into an effort like this, PM me.
