1. I think he just missed the draft.
He probably would have. He seems to have the character.

5. No graduated from College in 1974 then straight to Law School
http://www.johnedwards2004.com/john_edwards.asp

"A proud product of public schools, John became the first person in his family to attend college. He worked his way through North Carolina State University where he graduated with high honors in 1974, and then earned a law degree with honors in 1977 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. 7. That makes him 18 (+/-) in 1970

North Carolina State University where he graduated with high honors in 1974

He would've been draft bait. Maybe got a high lottery number.

As an Army vet, I don't have much heartburn with the folks that were against the war and weaseled out of it, e.g. Clinton, Dean.

What honks me off is the Commie-killer conservatives that we FOR the war, and stemming the tide of wicked Communism, but were too gutless and cowardly to contribute personally.

The list of conservative faux uber-patriots is long and distinguished (in a shameful kinda way):
Dubya
Cheney
DeLay
Hastert
Limbaugh
Hannity
O'Reilly
Bennett..

A f--- it! The list of these pussy hypoctites is TOO long!

14. "weaseled out of it"?!
the men who had the COURAGE to take that kind of crap from the likes of you, to resist fighting in an unconscionable war - and fought for the suffering souls who had no way to escape it - were HEROS then and are HEROS now!
does everyone here forget that?!

"pussy hypocrites"
i am so sick of the rabid mysogyny around here. 'heros' have "balls" here. cowards are "pussies".
media slime - a male bastion - are "whores"

"bitch"
"slut"

but call a man a prick?

i get hell when i even use the words white and male in the same phrase - a class of people desperately in need of deprogramming and a capacity for self-criticism.

peace

19. Just to say that we should just say we are against the war and will not
serve; instead of lying a and trying to give the impression that one would have served if physically fit.

Like Mohamed Ali did.

8. Missed the draft
My understanding is that he missed the draft by a year or so because of his age. The draft ended before Sharpton could be called up too.

I'm sure he would have served. Let's face it, he didn't have the financial resources to avoid it.

10. I think I read it ended within six months of him becoming ellegible.
And his number didn't come up. He turned 18 in July '71. When did the draft end?

I wonder if his mill worker dad could have pulled some string to get him out of the war if he had been drafted.

16. "the financial resources to avoid it"
and still come out privileged enough to be where he is now?

plenty resisted without any resources but absolute devotion to peace and justice.
and the courage to take the mental torture, including, for many, exile or prison.

11. From the looks of it, he very narrowly missed it
Edwards was born on June 10, 1953. That would have made him part of the last lottery drawing on February 2, 1972. Edwards birthdate drew a lottery number of 178. This lottery was for men to be drafted for service in 1973, but no new draft orders were issued after 1972.

I have a brother the same age as Edwards, and I remember my parents' great relief when it became apparent that he would not have to go.

17. yes, you are right
he's just a little older than I am (wish I had his "looks too young" problem) and I vividly remember that my friends who were drafted were at least a year older.
