... we're talking about a what? 22 year old Marine who got shot in the FACE the day before this incident, was returned to duty (might be a little jumpy?) and shot someone during a sweep. What the hell? That's war. That's law enforcement. If we're going to go ape$hit over a dead Iraqi, let's talk about the children -- that's the real crime.

I suggested the soldier may have been drugged up as treatment from his wounds. You disagreed, offering your expert diagnosis from watching a short video. Now you offer up a nonsensical response.

But the blame should be placed on the idiots who sent him out there. The prudent thing to do is find who is at fault.
But knee-jerk reactionism is much easier. Go with that, buddy.

are being shot/bombed/knifed by representatives of your country every day in Iraq. Why is this one so different for you? Because there is a video which is actually being aired?
I'm not defending this soldier. I was horrified just hearing about it, and seeing the video was even worse. But he's really no different than any of the others who are over there- they are ALL in impossible situations and put there by people who should have known better but were more interested in higher corporate profits for themselves and friends.
But this is just one more reason that our soldiers need to be brought home. And many will need a great deal of medical and psych treatment once they are here.
The real enemies are the politicians and corporatists who sent our men and women there.

There are also booby-trapped "dead men on the ground that have killed soldiers.
War is war...it is horrible and not fair to anyone. This is why it should only be an option of LAST RESORT.
Having said that...the blame lies with our leadership. Regardless of the war, atrocities are going to occur. It is a necessary evil that comes with war.
This is what Kerry was speaking of when he returned from Viet Nam...

If it was me I would have probably jumped too considering the circumstance, however we continue this hard-line, kill everyone approach, and it's not working. These Marines are not being disciplined under international laws concerning the rules of combat, the U.S. HAS TOTAL DISRESPECT FOR INTERNATIONAL LAW. This is only one of thousands of incidents, these troops have kill on site orders, anyone running away, trying to escape, or just plain looks suspicious is subject to getting killed on the whim of a young gun cowboy Marine. I've got friends from high school over there, these young guys just don't have respect for the seriousness of the situation, all they know is they want to stay alive.

There is absolutely no way to justify blowing off a wounded, unarmed man's head. 'That's law enforcement'??? Fuck. Where do you live, Beruit? And yes, I will go apeshit over a dead human being. I will go apeshit knowing one of my fellow citizens who should know better slaughtered someone like that for no goddamned good reason, whether the person be a child or adult.
Sometimes I just want to scream, because most people just don't fucking get it. Where's the fucking humanity?

4. They did a segment on it this morning |
|
and showed the film of the Iraqi being murdered. They then started spinning about how we didn't know all the facts surrounding this and needed to reserve judgement until we knew what the soldier in question had for breakfeast and how serious his injuries were from the day before that might have led him to feel like he was in mortal danger from the wounded Iraqi, and whether blah, blah, blah.
They then spun the story to how brave the reporters were that traveled with the troops on these dangerous missions.
Huh? What that soldier did was no different than what the Germans did to American soldiers at the Battle of the Bulge which gets the right wing all fired up and singing the Star Spangled Banner while they wipe away their patriotic tears.
And brave reporters? Is it now bravery to accompany soldiers while they murder the wounded and incapacitated?
And we scoffed at the Soviet press.

21. This might sound like a silly question, but... |
|
Why is a soldier back in the field of combat the day after receiving a wound, particularly a wound to his face?
Is this standard procedure?
Wouldn't there be a period of R&R?
Did the corporate media address this issue?
I did not see the video so I don't know anything about the extent of the soldier's injury, but it sounds to me like he went back into combat too soon...

higher-ups. If CNN says 'reserve judgement', I say yes - find out what their orders were - just like we're not doing in the prison atrocities.
My suspicion is that the U.S. doesn't want enemy combat prisons - they are too much grief for a number of reasons.
We should not even have to be talking about this because we shouldn't even be there. We are destroying lives. We are destroying our nation. For admitted wrong reasons. Everyone keeps saying we have to finish the job. The hole is getting deeper.
Peace has roadblocks that can be conquered, not holes that we can't get out of.

34. "Nothing they've been trained for justifies what happened here" |
|
I'm paraphrasing here, but I saw on either CNN or MSNBC this retired officer (I think he was a colonel) say something to the effect like this, and again I'm paraphrasing, "These marines are in tough combat situations, going through this and that, and we'll have to find out just what prompted this, probably in court. They're trained for all kinds of different scenarios, but it doesn't mean that anything they've been trained for could ever justify something like what happened here."
I thought his comments were more than fair. OTOH, one of the retired generals who I saw comment earlier on one of the networks was sickening. He totally justified the shooting by saying how dead insurgent bodies are often booby trapped. I guess he forgot that this poor bastard was still alive and kicking.
