"Support The Troops" Magnetic Car Stickers- Does $ Go To Troops? |
|
Does anyone know if the money being made off all these magnetic stickers that say "Support Our Troops" goes to our troops?
I looked all over the package and couldn't find any mention of whether it does or not.
Anyone know?

16. i'm sorry you didn't know that |
|
sLapping it on your car doesn't "support the troops" either - it just puts you in that group of peopLe who need to make open expressions of catch phrases to gain acceptance.
a paradox to me - cars with the ribbon and bush sticker. if they supported the troops, they wouLd have voted for kerry.

4. I know in some of the small stores here on the Oregon Coast go |
|
to the family members with people over in Iraq and where ever else we are. I don't know about the bigger chains, when I bought mine I made sure to ask. I had to do two transactions because the money went into a different place.

5. Ok, I read in one of the latest People magazines |
|
People magazine - I'll get my news here from now on. Can't trust real media anymore...
I read that the guys who came up with this ribbon do donate the proceeds to charities that support the troops. Some goes to make care packages for the troops overseas and some goes to organizations that support their families here at home.
I can't find a link, because I don't subscribe to the magazine and can't log in.

15. I read that too: I was stunned to read that only $45k went to the troops.. |
|
when they had sold millions of these ribbons.
However I think some organizations that buy and resell these ribbons donate the money to charity.

6. For most of the people who use those magnetic stickers |
|
Edited on Thu Nov-18-04 01:50 PM by Straight Shooter
it's just empty symbolism, like a married person who wears a ring but isn't faithful to their spouse.
Feel-good empty symbolism. I wish they would take that money and buy a phone card for the troops, or maybe take $5 worth of time and write a little letter to a soldier in Iraq, or how about donating it to the Red Cross.
Those magnets make me cringe. They're designed to make the buyers feel better about not really supporting the troops. And the companies that make them are raking in the money hand over fist.
Anybody know if the companies are owned by Republicans?
edit in response to rubyduby: I was told, can't remember where or when, the companies donate a percentage of the net proceeds.

about the percentage.
I skimmed in the checkout line (yeah right, who am I kidding. I'll reread it when I get home to doublecheck).
Thanks.

7. Sometimes the magnets are sold as part of a fundraiser. |
|
Groups will buy them in bulk, sell them for $5 or whatever, and use the proceeds to send care packages or give to families of deployed soldiers. But if you buy them at the 7-11 or something, the troops get very little. families of soldiers. They also make other magnets i.e. breast cancer awareness ribbons and donate the profits as well. Look before you buy. :hi:

a group of people in my town raises money for the troops in our area on the proceeds of these stickers. always ask where the money is going-if they don`t know don`t buy them. the group i know buys them for somewhere around 2.50 to 3.50 a piece and has gas stations ,etc sell them at double the cost. they have raised thousands of dollars this way and have sent much needed personal supplies to our troops. they sent teddy bears and other soft toys to the guys and gals to give to the kids in iraq. they also sent christmas party stuff last year and this year so the troops could have a little christmas cheer. this group also had tens of thousands of dollars worth of soap, shampoo, etc donated to them buy a local business mainly because of their work..alot can be done with hard work and some magnetic stickers...

13. I was at a store that sold them yesterday that sold them |
|
I picked one up and scanned the label looking for mention of charitable contribution.....NADA.
Apparently "support the troops" for many is just another catch phrase.
Fuck those opportunistic vultures that sell these things. I'm sure however, that some people that display them have sincerity in their hearts, but donating some of the cash from sales to vets seems like a no-brainer.
Read the label before purchase...some may donate. Screw the rest of 'em.

I think they came from the republicans since everyone in my church voted for bush, but the stickers are still being sold at $5.00 for a church project....vote for bush again.
