7. If we want to win, the nominee can't be Hillary
She is evil-incarnate to radical conservatives, just like Bush is to us. If you think people get motivated when Bush said "Massechussetts liberal," wait until they have Hillary to hate.

I like and respect Hillary but we can't win with her. Her nomination would only motivate more wingers to get out the vote.

10. I personally am far from crazy about Hillary
but 1) "She is evil-incarnate to radical conservatives, just like Bush is to us" -- well, it don't seem to worry them too much, does it? and 2) I think we need to stop giving the wingnuts a vote in our nominating process. How many times do we have to lose before we admit that this whole abstract pie-in-the-sky idea of "electability" is a bunch of conformist bullshit?

17. From Moral Politics by Lakoff...
As you are probably aware, many DUers are looking long and hard at books by George Lakoff on how to beat the Right. Here's what he said about Hillary in 1996:

"The demon-of-all-demons for conservatives is, not surprisingly, Hillary Clinton! She's an uppity woman, (Category 5, opposing the moral order), a former antiwar activist who is pro-choice (Category 4), a protector of the "public good" (Category 3), someone who gained her influence not on her own but through her husband (Category 2), and a supporter of multiculturalism (Category 1). It would be hard for the conservatives to invent a better demon-of-all-demons."

-George Lakoff, Moral Politics, pages 171-172

Categories of conservative moral action:

1) Promoting Strict Father morality in general.
2) Promoting self-discipline, responsibility, and self-reliance.
2) Upholding the Morality of Reward and Punishment.
4) Protecting moral people from external evils.
5) Upholding the Moral Order.

-George Lakoff, Moral Politics, pages 163

Hillary, no matter what we think of her, stands in opposition of everything wingers value.

19. I was not disputing any of this.
Edited on Mon Nov-22-04 02:50 PM by Goldmund
Read my post a little closer. What I said was not that they don't hate her -- they do -- but that 1) We hate Bush as well, as you pointed out, which only seemed to help him, even though our hatred is much more rational than theirs is of Hillary -- since, you know, he actually has a record as president, and 2) The wingers should not have a voice in nominating our candidates, forcrissakes. We threw away Dean and annointed Kerry because we thought he would be more palatable to the wingers. We muzzled Al Gore because we thought that would be more palatable to the wingers. We sign Patriot Acts and IWRs etc. because we think that's more palatable to the wingers. And we keep fucking losing. And pretty soon, if we continue on this course, we will lose our own base.

25. If it's Hillary, I'm voting for her.
I was expressing my opinion. Take it or leave it.

I would vote for Satan if he runs against the GOP candidate for President. I donated to Dean because he was the one I wanted. But when Kerry got the nod, I supported him 100%.

14. I love hillary, disagree somewhat with your post
Well, I would tend to be more positive about Hillary's chances of victory in 08. She clearly is not afraid to be a liberal and speak out about her core left beliefs, which is something that I think Kerry failed to do in this race. I think if we could just get a candidate (like Hillary) who would just stand up and proudly run as a liberal, we could take our country back from these crazy neocons.

15. my response to that is...
The RW fundies all turned out this year to put Bush back in office... I don't think they can turn out too much more except through their rapid breeding program adding numbers to the voter rolls.

I'm not saying that in support of Hillary at all, as I would prefer Clark and/or Warner in 2008.

34. As Hilary herself said last week on the Today show...
The current President is one of the most polarizing people she's ever seen in politics and he seems to be "doing okay." So I don't see how the media and others can preach the "she's too polarizing" mantra about her anymore. She's less polarizing, I think than Chimpy.

35. I don't care for Hillary--therefore she should be the Dem nominee
Since a politician's electability seems to be in inverse proportion to how much I like them, i.e. totally agreed with Kuchinich, love Dean, like Kerry, hate Bush, therefore maybe Hillary might be a good candidate for the Democrats. She falls somewhere between Kerry and Bush on my scale and that may be a good thing.

20. I remember when Rush guaranteed Hillary wouldn't run for Senate.
And when he guaranteed she wouldn't win.

I think the Right's hatred of her is an asset. Their visceral hatred will expose the ugliness of their shriveled hearts and propel her into the role of "people's champion". Not that she can hold a candle to Paul or Sheila Wellstone, but she definitely has the necessary charisma.

27. It must be that "reverse psychology" that Republicans are so fond of using
If all the right-wing talking heads say, "Hillary won't run in 2008," they're hoping the Democrats will get angry and make sure she runs, which is exactly what the Republicans wanted in the first place.

39. Rush & all the other right wing nuts are scared to death of Hillary
or they wouldn't waste so much time running her down. They're also petrified that the Democrats will be the first party to run and win with a female candidate. I have no doubts they want to beat us to the punch and take away women's votes forever from us. Imagine how we'd all feel if they did that and won, all because we never had the balls to run Hillary.

I say fuck the repukes. If Hillary is the most qualified candidate we have, then who gives a rats ass what those hypocrites say about her. I for one will not be intimidated by them into shunning Hillary just because they hate her so much. In fact, if Rush and his crew hate her so much, then she just may be the best one for us.
