Will you be in DC for the 'inauguration'? You'd better.
The Progressive Democrats of America is holding a summit during the convention, the basic outlines of which can be read here:

http://www.pdamerica.org/tools/events/jan_summit_2005.pdf

There will be a number of panels and speeches delivered by a variety of important voices, including Dr. James Zogby (founder and president of the Arab American Institute and member of the Human Rights Watch Middle East Advisory Committee), James Cohen (founder of FAIR), Medea Benjamin, Howard Dean, John Conyers, Tom Hayden and a number of others (including me).

Keep an eye on the PDA site for further updates:

http://www.pdamerica.org/

You need to be there.

1. I wish I could.
Three small children and a dissertation are keeping me housebound these days. I will be an activist yet again, I promise.

Funds are definitely tight around here. I couldn't afford to go if I had the freedom to do so.

2. Yep, gonna be there
but if my protest comes off without a hitch, I will be cooling my heels in jail and won't be able to attend. However, if I'm talked out of it - won't discuss it on this board except to say it is protest art, not plans to hurt anyone, I'm still going to be there for this event you've mentioned. Sounds right up my alley.

3. I want to be there
my biggest hold back is having a place to stay at that I can afford.
Do you have any suggestions? I can get there it's the cost of staying that holds me back.
Being an evil smoker kinda' limits my options with other people and please please don't start on me for my smoking. I feel bad enough on my own that I haven't been able to give it up.

37. Days Inn Crystal City
sucks, but it's cheap. Fairfield Inn next door is nicer and not expensive, but it was full when I was there. Both are a short walk from the Metro stop.

Dress warm! We froze our fannies off in D.C. last year.

...look in PG county. Lanham, Cheverly...think there's a Red Roof Inn. Also check Virginia outside the Beltway....heading down 95 south.

I'm so pissed off at our local DEC, that I don't want to work with them anymore. I'd rather work with an organization that actually does something.

8. What makes this org different from DFA or DNC?
I hope we aren't diluting forces here by
creating too many wings of the liberal parties.

Just looking for an academic answer to
my question. Thanks.

11. Answer
Progressive Democrats of America = the Kucinich people;

Democracy for America = the Dean people

The two groups have recently joined forces to become one organization.

13. One Organization?
It was my understanding that they were going to be working together in some cases, but not become one organization. That would be troubling since they have very different stated goals. PDA is committed to advancing progressive candidates. DFA has supported moderates and seems to be a vehicle for Dean rather than an ideological movement. I'm not sure what the PDA had in mind with this. If we're going to partner with moderate organizations why not just join the DLC?

9. I'll be at a Jazz Funeral For Democracy
just in time for mardi gras, we'll mourn the death of democracy New Orleans-style with a Wake For Peace complete with second line parade, brass bands and a horse drawn carriage.

Make hotel and travel reservations ASAP - it's Carnival time!

33. Road Trip
This is Goddess40's mom. Goddess40 and I will be there if buses go from Wisconsin. It's one long ride but we did it for the peace protest last October and we did it to protest the Repuke's convention in NY. The best thing about going on a charter bus is you don't have to worry about a place to stay. You ride all night and all day both ways. Like I say it's a hard trip but we'll do it in a heart beat to protest *.

34. check craigslist.org for places to sleep
Here's a good one:

http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/sub/50799420.html

FREE comfortable sleeping space or one free small bedroom available immediately in upper northwest Washington D.C. Walk to Metro. Downtown DC busses at front door. No need to pay for anything ( We just want someone to stay at the house since we are not home too much, we do not like to waste sleeping spaces while many other people may need some free conveneint and very comfortable free places to sleep ) Fully furnished. All amenities. No needed to bring anything. Phone/internet(high speed) and everything. Just stay there only when you can stay. Write to us: xblond@usa.com

craigslist is an alternative message board for all kinds of goods and services in various cities across the country. Caveat emptor, of course. But listers are generally good folks and lefties.

don’t necessarily want to head out without my kids, but think it’s important enough to find a way. I do understand how many others would find it really hard to go though, I just need to do it. I’ll drive through the night and just pay for gas, I suppose.
