It's bad enough that the Republicans use language like the "F" (not fraud) word and "MF" around kids. We don't need to stoop to their level. It would also be preferable if threads with foul language in the title were deleted.

1. No
We'd be just as candy assed as the repukes who flip out over the sight of a bare breast or an off-color word. People can just get over it.

91. Cally - that's a really good point!
Hell of a lot easier to explain to my 7 year old that "Fuck" is a grown up word that we use, he doesn't, expecially at school or around my mother in law that it is to discuss graphic war casualities, reproductive freedom (in detail) or other "grown up topics" discussed here.

It may not always be necessary to use "blue" language to make a point, it is sometimes is!

6. Well, Tom...
I would have to say that if there ARE children at this site, their attendance is not entirely appropriate. Now, I am all for civic conciousness being taught to children just as soon as they show an interest. That is a great thing when a child shows such an interest and aptitude. We need more of that.

But, that said, the intended audience here IS adults and a lot of those adults tend to blow off a little steam, as is appropriate when you consider the times in which we live.

So, no, I don't think that a new spirit of censorship is either necessary or needed here. What I would suggest is that parents treat DU as an adult-oriented site.

On the other hand, I have known a lot of kids who have a far..."richer" command of colloquialism, color and invective than I have ever had and will ever have. ;-)

7. Language is only vulgar if you decide to make it vulgar
so don't make it vulgar, and it's only offensive if you decide to be offended. OOOOOO zzzzzap -- look at that! You just took power away from someone who wants to lord over you, and/or became a person with a strong backbone. Isn't it wonderful? Sorry, I'm not your PC kind of liberal.

And I'm a writer. And I use ALL the words. I also consider my posts to be my own sort of artistic liberty. It's refreshing that language isn't censored over here like the preschool that we call Free Republic -- where they rail over liberal PC, but censor posts because of language. Brilliant.

I will replace my outraged swearing with %$&$^*$% until I am beyond anger again.

So %^(*& the bozo's that want to $#(*&#$ your $#(%&* #($# $, and never forget to #$(*&* with a $#()%*()$ from behind as you #($*$#(%* their $#()*$#( into their throats.

15. Teach children
to get over word magic! They are just words. It is your intention, and how and where and when you use them that has any import.

Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never do anything but offend someone who can't handle symbolic expression.

Vulgarity is an Elitist concept, from what I understand: "Of the commmon people". Fuck that! Fuck the censorship which goes along with that.

Besides, "fuck" is a very versitile word and I have never seen it hurt anyone physically. WHen you see a vulgar word start doing something violent, let me know.

"Bush" on the other hand is a word of mass destruction, (WMD) that is actually doing a lot of real harm.

19. It's better than it used to be
in this regard (in my opinion -- and with the notable exception of this thread).

The moderators have a hard enough job, and I don't think that policing this sort of language should be added to it -- ignoring issues of "free speech". Members are therefore to be left to their own "judgment". (I thought that there was a rule related to this -- something about "excessive" -- but I was unable to find it now.)

Personally, I have been trying to be more careful about my language. However, at times, I find it impossible to avoid certain strong (and commonplace) usages.

And there are often other grounds on which to "alert" offensive posts.

Sheltering kids from the world is how we get fascists in the White House and Congress.

I had my mind permanently opened at age 6 when I saw a friend's father's WWII photo album of concentration camps he helped liberate.

The sooner kids learn the truth, the more immune from bullshit they are.

Edited on Wed Dec-01-04 10:41 PM by gordianot
They discuss things I had no clue about until I was in my mid twenties. I have not lived a sheltered life. From some of the things my daughter has voluntarily shown me on the Internet I would say the language here is mild.

I refuse to put filters on her computer, she at 13 is much more mature and shows far better judgment than I had a similar age.

For about a week after November 2 my language was foul. There are a lot of people here (like me) in bad humor and use this forum to vent. What I have seen the moderators show good judgment for the more extreme incidents.

31. They say that New Englanders
have the best command of colorful language. I tend to swear like a longshoreman sometimes, and when I choose to emphasize something it often works best to use a striking word that carries a modicum of weight. Most of us here prefer to exercise our first amendment rights as much as possible, as long as we've GOT those rights. During the next four years. I am sure those rights will be challenged, and we had all better be prepared for that day when we lose the ability to say what we want to say with whatever phrasing we choose to use.

32. Who are you? Lynne Cheney or Tipper Gore?
The two "cultural values crusaders" of 2000!

HOLLYWOOD SNAPS BACK AT GOP/DEMO CULTURE CRUSADE

Lynne Throws A Fit, McCain Has Doubts, Gore Takes The Money. It's all part of an election year where civil liberties and state-church separation are under attack by political groups on both sides of the ideological divide.

Web Posted: September 20, 2000

In the wake of threats by Vice President Al Gore to impose sanctions on the entertainment industry for allegedly marketing certain videos and other entertainment to kids, Hollywood movers-and-shakers finally began speaking out against what some described as a wave of new McCarthyism. Key Democrats and Republicans -- from Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman to Lynne Cheyney, wife of Republican vice presidential hopeful Dick Cheney -- have spent much of the past two weeks accusing the entertainment industry of promoting violence, blasphemy and antifamily values.

"I think it's a bunch of weasels scrambling for votes," groused Larry Kasanoff of Threshold Entertainment, the company behind much-maligned video games like Mortal Kombat and Duke Nukem. He told the New York Times that a recent study by the Federal Trade Commission about marketing of violent films to children had become a "headline-grabbing political pile-on" according to reporter Rick Lyman.

"I think that what they're doing is reprehensible," said Kasanoff. "What they should be doing is focusing on why there is less of a family structure in America today. Instead they attack us. These guys attack the easy issue because the hard issue doesn't make for such big headlines.."

I don't think there's anyone around here who's under 12... and if they haven't heard "naughty words" by that age, then there are more problems in their life than being "exposed" to the occasional "fuck" "shit" or "ass".

You seem to think that kids will be better off if they're "shielded" from the real world. So I guess they'll take the bombshell that hits them at age 18 that life isn't all rosy and peachy real well, right? :eyes:

Except when someone, I don't know, smears Wes Clark for example.

Then I must, as Wes put it when asked what he would do if the Republicans tried to smear him like they did McCain:

"We'll beat the shit out of them" - Wes Clark

There is a time and a place for everything. I don't like to see foul language overused because then it loses it's usefulness in the rare instances it is called for and lowers the civility of the discourse.

Nevertheless, this is a free site and it is the parent's responsibility to filter what words they see on their computer screen, not mine.

The first ammendment wins here, my friend.

The language is sometimes going to reflect the way adults often talk when they are passionate or angry or otherwise stirred up about important issues. The last thing we need, IMHO, is some kind of Profanity Police running around on a Progressive website lecturing people on their language like a Fundy at an ice cream social. Just my two (non-profane) cents.

63. I have yet.....
.... to understand how a "bad word" hurts children. The "for the children" argument is so often abused by the right that I can't hear it any more.

Plus let me say this. I don't know how old you are, but on the schoolyard things are not what they once were. Kids in elementary school know more colorful language than I did in high school.

Is that "good"? Not really. Is it the cause of societal rot? No, it is merely a symptom, and it takes a total back seat to the worse rot of "I've got mine and everyone else is a loser and can go to hell" mentality that PERVADES our culture and especially youth culture.

Want to rail on something rail on that.

66. Overusing certain words makes them lose impact.
I try to save my obscenity, profanity, scatology & just plain vulgarity for special occasions. But that's a matter of taste.

DU is not intended for children. Parents can't prevent their little darlings from knowing certain words exist. Training in good manners should include adjusting one's language to avoid giving offense. Of course, it's quite possible to offend people by using words of four syllables instead of four letters; and it's more fun.

Here's a site that shares your concerns: www.afa.net/

among their friends and on the radio and tv is as profane as anything I've seen on DU.

I'm not talking about pre-schoolers or young elementary school kids, who wouldn't be on DU anyhow. I'm talking about middle-school aged and up.

As much as I'd like to "protect" my 11-year-old, she's now heard it all thanks to Usher, Outkast, Eminem, etc. Where does she hear the stuff? At her school on Fridays during lunch when a student DJ plays the hits.

85. You're out of line!
Cuss words ain't shit! Most children, who are raised properly, know when and when not to use what you may term "foul" language. Get real-kids are going to say and do what they want behind your back. As long as they don't behave in a way as to ruin their little reputations in their communities-why do you really care what words they use or hear? Cuss words are a colorful part of our language-and usually never mean anything foul when used in context. As in "Shit Yeah!" or "I don't give a fuck!" "Damn Straight" etc.
Kids who are taught the reasons why we behave one way socially and perhaps another in private, should understand. I really don't see that you have to teach a kid that really. They should observe this in you as an example. So-I think you are worrying too much about the effect these words may have on a child-unless you're raising yours in a closet. Then, it is you who need to reevaluate your parenting.:+

she came home asking me what F-U-C-K meant. It was on the bathroom wall. In a K-3 school. Think about that: a K-3 school. Apart from teachers and other staff, no one there should have been over 9 years old.

Daughter is now 35, you do the math. Back in the Ozzie and Harriet days, I learned the F word about 1956-57, when I was 9 or 10. I was at ballet class and it was on the bathroom wall in the auditorium. I vaguely remember some adults making a flap over it. Maybe I only paid attention because they made a flap over it?

118. Goebbels once said...
...and I paraphrase this, because I don't have the exact quote handy at the moment, but basically what he said was, "you can get away with stripping away virtually any kind of rights as long as you say you're doing it in the name of the children."

So the answer to your question is a big, fat negatory from me.

If there are children on DU, it should be under parental supervision, as with all the child's activity on the Internet. Like a super-computer-geek friend of mine once said, "I don't understand why parents would allow their young kids to surf around the Internet unsupervised. They wouldn't let them wander around some strange, enormous city without protection, direction and supervision. It's basically the same thing."

If you've chosen to have children, limiting what they see in the media is your responsibility, not the rest of the world's.

123. South park expounded on it with: "You don't hate children, do you?"
as incentive to conform(and using kids in the commercial)

125. I love DU - you guys are GREAT!!
great responses to this red herring argument

and to the troll that started this - if DU is so "vulgar" maybe you should just keep your kids away from it, right? IT's caled BEING A PARENT. Do you go to porn sites and tell them to put on clothes because kids may be watching? No, you keep your kids away from it.

Now get in your SUV and go back to the mall, freeper.

122. what is wrong with our language? (please read on)
When I was in 3rd grade (back in the 70's) I remeber sitting with my friend david in the grass and saying every cuss word know to man. His folks were getting divorced, not as common in those days. To me such words were not to be used all the time, only on special ocassions.

To me, in a sense now, such things were actually good - ie, certain words were not part of the overall speech unless so warranted as to convey a larger meaning/emotion.

In that vein I agree that maybe they are overused at times here. They lose their luster and just become common phrases. On the other hand many here are at different levels of emotions and may have reached their own personal plateau within the language they possess (with regards to conveying something).

I would hope that we could convey things in a less emotional way and more in an analysis way using strict language, but to each their own.

I think in some ways, while this board is not for kids, we should be a little more friendly to them in this vein (ie, showing them maybe a better way of expressing themselves and dealing with problems) but I don't own the board or make the rules.

Perhaps suggest a forum for kids? I dunno, but understand your concerns and in no way am trying to belitte them - the thing about progressives is we listen (or should) before we ridicule ;)

124. Using more 'artistic" words than vulgarity makes a much better statement
Instead of using "fuck" such as we are "fucked", use "exploited".

Instead of using "bitch" such as Ann Coulter is a "bitch", use "cross-eyed, hate-filled wench".

See what I'm sayin', motherfucker?

128. Mr Jefferson
Words are not dangerous. They have no intrinsic power until you invest them with it.

How can a word be "foul"? It can't. It becomes that way only in the minds of certain listeners.

Suck it up, and teach your children that "Fuck" isn't nearly as foul as "napalm", or "genocide" or a whole host of other words which represent things which should never have come into existence.

Take a fucking walk around any fucking middle or high school in the fucking USA, you'll fucking hear a lot fucking worse.

With only 97 fucking posts and no fucking donations, I don't fucking think you should be even daring to come fucking here and try to fucking censor us. This is NOT a fucking children's forum and we'll fucking say whatever the fuck we fucking please. So what the fuck about that don't you fucking understand or if you don't fucking like it, well thanks to the fucking vice president, you can fucking go Cheney yourself.

Actually, this was quite a fucking fun exercise in seeing how many fucking times I could fucking use the word fuck in a single fucking post.

139. I'll only use the language I'd use around 8 yr old half sister
Which is just about anything. Vulgarities are only a problem with children when they are taught that they are dirty and not to be used.

140. Cuss words are maybe the only thing Red and Blue have in common
other than the need to eat and breathe.

I see no need to alter my behavior because you are uncomfortable about what it *might* do to a theoretical child who doesn't even belong here. That's like saying "No drinking" in a bar.
