Boycotting Bad Guys vs. Supporting Local/Independents |
|
Edited on Thu Dec-02-04 12:50 PM by democraticinsurgent
I think it's great to boycott or support companies based on their corporate behavior and their political leanings. I for one do not shop Wal-Mart for all the obvious reasons, and Sears for their history of deceptive tactics that I've been personally affected by.
However, it's a gargantuan task to organize a true national boycott of big bad chains. I would certainly encourage such attempts but it would have to be a huge effort to make much of a dent.
Another way to have an effect is to actively support your local independent retailer. It sometimes costs more, but not always. Many independents are competitive if not lower on price.
To me it's a really positive thing to do for one's community as well. Particularly in tough economic times, it's the small retailer who suffers the most quickly and may not have the resources to ride it out.
I can't say that I always practice what I preach, but increasingly this is how I am trying to vote with my $.

we need all the help we can get... You can help! If you know of any businesses in your local area that sported big Bush or Kerry signs or voiced any other support, let us know. We'll add them to the database. http://www.globalblogs.com/progressivepages/index.htmlFSC

2. I am an independent retailer, and I thank you |

I'd also like to add that our sales are up this year and for this holiday season so far. Quite a few of our customers have said, "We'd rather buy from you rather than the larger stores." They say they like the personal service we offer, our selection and just the plain old fact that we're a unique shop and not a giant box store.
Thanks again! :hi:

Should have probably mentioned that at the outset, but it doesn't really matter. The principle is right.
Glad to hear you are doing well! I think there's plenty of room for both huge boycotts and individual/community support of local retail.
My main point was that the local retailer will feel the extra support much faster than big box will notice a boycott.
Glad to have the link to Progressive Pages as well!

I know Indiana's awfully red, and sometimes people like to stay under the radar, but if someone's sporting a prominent sign, they obviously aren't afraid of the repercussions.
If you think of anybody, let me know. Or enter it yourself. It's easy! FSC
