1. I always come out more liberal than Gandhi
I think the only thing I go along with in the far right is that I feel a country should have a common speech. I think ours should be English as our laws are now in that.

Edited on Sun Dec-05-04 07:21 PM by bush_is_wacko
I am healthy enough to do just about anything, but I have two children (BTW, not little, teenager and preteen) I choose to work either part-time or not at all. Do you think I should get paid for being a stay-at-home mom? I don't think I should, but do you think I deserve societies respect for making that choice? I do believe that I deserve societies respect for that choice. I don't often get it, even from my own family. I had a hard time answering this question because of that fact. I assumed they are asking about financial support and answered agree.

Is there such a thing as a libertarian-left Christian? NOW there is. :D

"Being a lover of freedom, when the revolution came, I looked to the universities to defend it, knowing that they had always boasted of their devotion to the cause of truth; but no, the universities were immediately silenced. Then I looked to the great editors of the newspapers, whose flaming editorials in days gone had proclaimed their love of freedom; but they, like the universities, were silenced in a few short weeks...

"Only the Church stood squarely across the path of Hitler's campaign for suppressing the truth. I never had any special interest in the Church before, but now I feel a great affection and admiration for it because the Church alone has had the courage and persistence to stand for intellectual and moral freedom. I am forced to confess that what I once despised I now praise unreservedly."

A lot of us don't fit in with the "party line," whatever that may be.

The authoritarian/libertarian axis is more important than party officials (of either party) realize. I'd rather be left alone on moral issues, myself.

What attracted you to DU?

58. Diving in now
I've nevcer been happy with the "left/right" political spectrum, tho I am not a "moderate." Moderates are too afraid to offend anybody so they try to split the difference, at least in my way of thinking.

To be brutally honest I lurk at both Free republic and DU, just like I switch from Rush/Hannity to Franken/Schultz/Randi Rhodes.

Pretty much everybody pisses me off because both side play on emotions in a big game of gotcha.

I try to be polite and discuss issues calmly. We can disagrfee without being disagreeable.

As my father said: "Even if you are going to kill somebody it doesn't hurt you to be polite to them."

Thanks for the welcome.

I recall Dennis was on the libertarian left. Dean was really close to where Bush is on the Presidential Election chart at the site They are in the upper right section of the authoritarian right. Kerry is on the authoritarian right but not far from the midpoint. I don't remember the other primary candiates.

55. Where to start...
Let me start by saying that I became a staunch Republican after 9/11. Bush had my unflinching support - just like he got from millions of Americans on that day. However, my respect has faded significantly since then.

I don't think that Bush is evil incarnate. He believes that what he is doing is best for the nation, in my opinion. However, his ideals of spreading democracy throughout the world simply aren't working. It's not America's business, nor should it be.

Most of all, Bush bothers me with his fiscal policies. He claims to be a "compassionate conservative", which appearantly means cut taxes (mostly for the rich) while "compassionately" increasing spending. It doesn't work.

In my ideal world, I think that someone like Ross Perot should be president. He's an independent, intelligent conservative. Lately, though, I have been siding with the Democrats, which have become the opposition party. The Republicans have proven that they are not a conservative party; they're militarists. I feel so alienated.

Ban me if you wish because I'm not a rank-and-file Democrat. However, I will be siding with the "opposition" in order to put a roadblock in the way of the Republican monopoly over the government. Government works best when the least gets done.

83. "Libertarian" - Classical/anarchist libertarian or capitalist/market liber
It should be noted that the term "Libertarian" is ambiguous,
as it is being claimed by both Left-wingers and Right-wingers as theirs.

I'd argue that "Libertarian" is therefore ill-suited as a point of reference in a political compass.

"Libertarian" and "Libertarianism" have an entry in wikipedia (pointing to the same article) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libertarian
where it is noted that
"The neutrality and factual accuracy of this article are disputed. See the article's talk page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Libertarianism) for more information."

The messages on the talk page shed some light on the controversy surrounding the term "Libertarianism"/"Libertarian" - not just on wikipedia but in general:

"You need to be clear about which kind of libertarian you are talking about at all times: Classical/anarchist libertarian or capitalist/market libertarian. (...) Just saying "Libertarian" is too vague and will lead to confusion. It also ignores the history of the word libertarian- you know the people who coined and used the term for almost 90 years before it was hijacked by a completely different ideology circa 1960.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Libertarianism/Archive2 (see link "4 ok...")

"The Right-wing Libertarians keep messing with this thing to keep people from finding out that Libertarians don't necessarily have to subscribe to capitalism.
A left-wing libertarian would argue that a true libertarian cannot subscribe to capitalism and a market economy, because within the capitalist system there are still hierarchies and authority, they are just not in the form of a traditional nation-state. A true libertarian would oppose all authority, weather it comes from a boss, corporation, king/dictator, government, or landlord. Right-wing libertarians only oppose governments and kings/dictators, but are strangely content with all forms of authority that exist elsewhere."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Libertarian

"There isn't much point arguing about the word "libertarian." It would make about as much sense to argue with an unreconstructed Stalinist about the word "democracy" — recall that they (Stalinists) called what they'd constructed "peoples' democracies." The weird offshoot of ultra-right individualist anarchism that is called "libertarian" here happens to amount to advocacy of perhaps the worst kind of imaginable tyranny, namely unaccountable private tyranny. If they want to call that "libertarian," fine; after all, Stalin called his system "democratic". But why bother arguing about it?" — Noam Chomsky
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Libertarianism#Quoted_comment_from_a_libertarian

"Big L and small l
this is a really obvious example of why small-l "libertarian" and big-L "Libertarian" MUST be distinct entries. The same problem applies to "green Party" versus "Green Party". Thankfully there we have the big-P small-p to distinguish them..."
===
"Think. How do people distinguish between capital and lower case words in speech? They use extra words to disambiguate."
===
"Personally, I think using case distinctions for meaning is stupid and wrong, because English wasn't designed that way, but I recognize that some people do use that convention, so an encyclopedia article should explain the use of the convention."

"As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."

98. Some people are Right-wing because of their religion
so therefore, have a heartfelt attachment to right-wing causes. If you stumbled upon this website because you are open to different ideas, you'll be fine. If you can corroborate your assertions with evidence from unbiased sources, you'll be fine. if you came here to parrott pro-Bush BS, you'll be tombstoned.

Welcome.

We're pretty much opposite
Left: -6.0 and Libertarian: -5.69
But I have friends who fall into your range. And when they start telling me why things need to be constrained and regimented, I let them talk.

I mean, wouldn't I be hypocritical if I suggested they weren't free to think and do as they wished?

So, stick around, have a look. But as suggested by others, telling us why we HAVE to do something or believe something, does not sit well.

118. What a load of crap!
This test puts Saddam Hussein on the Left. That says a lot right there. What a joke.

This test has a pretty silly view of what capitalism and the state are, and how they are interrelated--or more generally between the relations of production, and the kind of states reflected by certain production relations.

I put about as much stock in this test as in one of those "Rate Your Mate" tests you find in Cosmo.
