18. Wow. That's incredibly callous.
How many soldiers currently serving in the military have children? How many that DIED IN IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN have left children behind?
HOW MANY?
As I said, that's incredibly callous. I've heard that excuse ("But I've got a family") from right-wingers who didn't serve, and it makes me so fucking mad...

12. Your list is rather disingenuous
You've listed many Dems who have served, & they should be proud & we should be grateful for their service.

On the Repub side, your list includes many non-servers, however you left off many who did serve.

Ted Stevens, after McCain, is probably the highest decorated Senator.
Chuck Hagel & Tom Ridge are both decorated combat veterans.
John Warner served in the Navy & Marines.

And Rumsfeld was a Navy pilot.
And Lindsay Graham served on active duty in the Jag Corps.

And there are many, many more.

I'm grateful to all our Vets, whether Dem or Repub.

17. Yes, obviously I have missed the point
What is it?

That lots of Dems have served honorably?

Of course they have.

But I could make a long list of Republicans who have served & Dems who did not.

So what is the point?

21. The POINT is that nearly all the pro-war Repubs in power did not serve
The link to the Chickenhawk database is in one of the posts below mine. As far as I know the New Hampshire Gazette originated the list.

Whether or not the the NH Gazette invented the idea, they define a Chickenhawk as a person who is rabidly pro-war, BUT when given the opportunity to enlist for a war somehow just never made the time to do so. That, my dear, is the significance of the list and its incredible preponderance of Republican Chickenhawks as opposed to Democratic veterans.

These men (and in the case of Condi Rice, a woman) are awfully damn enthusiastic about this illegal war, and almost none of them have ever served in uniform, much less experienced combat. They want your kids and mine to put their lives on the line, and they want you and me to believe that questioning their motives and methods is tantamount to treason. But nearly every one of them ducked when it was their turn.

That obscene excuse for a human being Donald Rumsfeld sent our kids out to die in the desert without sufficient bullets or water, and in numbers too small to get the job done competently -- in other words, our army can flatten a city but they can't keep the peace, and it is probably too late now to create any sort of order out of this chaos. Because Rummy, with no personal experience and dismissing the advice of seasoned generals, ordered this war done on the cheap as regards personnel and their needs.

I don't think military experience needs to be a prerequisite for becoming President, and as a contemporary of Bill Clinton's I never held it against him that he opposed the Vietnam War and excused himself from it by completely legal means (i.e. he was a scholarship student). I'm sorry that Bill fudged about that -- I think he should have said flat out that this ill-conceived war tore our nation apart, and that he did what he believed was right, as did others who made other choices.

But when Clinton became president, he did NOT do as the Chickenhawks have done: he did not invent a war and then boastfully call himself a war president, and when he believed we had to become involved in foreign conflict, he followed the advice of his generals, whom he correctly believed knew a lot more about conducting a war than he did. Clinton may have avoided Vietnam, but he did not become a Chickenhawk.

Hekate

22. I agree with you completely about the Chicken Hawk Theory
& I saw lists of them a long time ago.

And I agree with you that this administration is chock full of them, beginning with Dubya & his Veep.

But my point of exception, is that the lists make it look like only Dems served, & that's not true.

Also, Joe Lieberman is one of the BIGGEST chickenhawks around...he loves to go to war, as long as he's not putting his butt on the line.

And did you know that Richard Perle is a Dem?

Anyway, I see lots of hypocrisy on both sides. Remember Kerry/Edwards both voted for the IWR. And Edwards didn't serve.

And what about Colin Powell, who said we should never go to war without "An Exit Strategy?"

Too many hypocrites in politics to list them all.

23. C'mon
you should know better than anyone that Perle is as much of a Dem as Wes Clarke is a republican.

And I'm somewhat annoyed by your "pox on both houses" attitude. While you're correct there's a lot of hypocrisy on both sides, it's insulting to hear of moral equivalence.

Except in the case of Lieberman. He is a chickenhawk.

20. thats true. these republicans did serve and should be on that list
as well.

speaking to your post below, the fact that a majority of these people are the ones involved in policymaking and sending citizens to fight an horrifc war (among other things), makes this list both important and fascinating for many

but yes, if were going to have this list, its also important for it to be complete for both sides

13. PLEASE don't forget...
That’s a wonderful list, but there’s a rather glaring omission, isn’t there?

Democrat:

WESLEY CLARK, first in his class at West Point, 1966.
U.S. Army, 1966 to 2000.
Awarded Silver Star for heroism in Vietnam.
Awarded Legions of Merit, Purple Heart.
Wounded four times in combat.
Promotions to rank of four-star general.
Supreme Allied Commander, Europe.
Led NATO coalition to victory in Kosovo without loss of a single American life.
