"why the terrorists have not attacked our food supply"
"For the life of me, I cannot understand why the terrorists have not
attacked our food supply because it is so easy to do."
- TOMMY G. THOMPSON, the secretary of health and human services,
announcing his resignation.

Is it a good idea for a person in his position to say something like this!?

1. This quote was highlighted in the NY Times today
and I was thinking the same thing you were. It's almost an open invitation for terrorists, it seems to me. Better start stocking up on canned goods now.

20. Just a diversion.

The U.S. food supply is ALREADY POISONED. Think Monsanto. They're just setting up the premise for ya'll to YET AGAIN, to blame someone ELSE when the results of the FDA's winks and nods to the corporate predators produce results that can no longer be ignored. It's called
"innoculation." Musta been them damned heathen darkies!!!

2. No. But he's saying what a lot of us are...
Edited on Sat Dec-04-04 10:19 AM by HypnoToad
Food, water, maybe even energy. The media continually has field days over what really isn't secure.

Now add in all their reports about how stress hurts people, how rush hour is bad, how being deprived of sleep is bad, and these guys are obviously doing their bit to sock it to corporate america. The people can do nothing except grumble, but at least the info is out there. All that's left is to connect the dots.

Indeed. As he is the something or another of health, why didn't he prod shrubbypants* to do more about the problem?

4. I had the exact same thought.
Even if it is true and we need to be vigilant, why oh why is the attitude of the folks in this WH to scare people unnecessarily? You'd think that they had some sort of plan to manipulate people by playing off of their fears! :D

5. No "failure of imagination" on his part
but I think announcing it like inviting terrorists to do something.

6. Humm...I thought that too...
...Actually the exact thought was: 'Way to tell them what to attack next, asswipe! Nothing like doing the terrorist's job for them!'

Any bets on Bushco 'foiling' a terrorist attack on our food supply in the next few weeks?

7. which position is that?
The one with him curled up and kissing his own tail for doing the bidding of bushco, then getting pushed out so bushco could reward someother sycophantic crony?

8. I speculated on my blog about just what the hell he could have meant:
* The terraists want to poison our food. Pretty straightforward.
* The terraists want to poison our food and (cough cough) the Administration isn't doing a damn thing about it and what are they going to do, fire me?
* Nobody cares about HHS, so I wanted to say something to ensure I got media coverage.
* I really wanted Transportation but Rove wouldn't let me have it so I'm huffing.
* You measly furriners with the funny accents and dark skin wanna mess with the good ole' USA?!?! BRING IT ON, baby!

9. There are SO MANY soft targets...
that an attack on any one of them could seriously damage the U.S. and the admin has done NOTHING to protect them. Nuclear power plants, chemical plants, even rural areas that jets fly low enough over to be attacked by asault weapons (remember the ban is lifted)... the number of 'easy' targets is countless.

To boot, our borders are wide open, leaving the door basically wide open for terrorists to enter the country... yet again, there is nothing being done... most of our resources are being thrown into Iraq...

Perhaps its the strategy of luring the terrorists into Iraq like a giant bug zapper... personally, if terrorists were patient enough, smart enough and coordinated enough to pull off 9/11, I don't think the terrorists are so stupid as to enter a deadly war zone.

There is too much about the 9/11 attacks that don't make sense and the 9/11 comission seems to have barely scratched the surface as to what really happened. We may never know the truth.

10. The truth is, we are very fragile.
I often think of how easy a food attack would be. Just Safeway is all it would take. And just the headquarters. For example, in California they'd only have to hit the Pleasanton distribution center. And one or two in each state. That would only take a couple of hundred people (terrorists, if you will. I hate the word.). And it would virtually shut down the united states.
Or, if they simply hit the main gas or electric lines. It's so easy, it's pathetic. I ride by both on daily trips. You'd need millions of cops to protect our fragile system. One or two towers, and entire portions of states would be dark. Like the NY outtage.

I think the truth is, people don't like causing trouble. Unless they have an agenda. The people of the middle east don't have an agenda. But the people in Washington do. Those are the real terrorists. I'm not exaggerating- 100,000 dead Iraqis is proof.

11. Do you remember the Tylenol murders?
I think that capsules were tainted with cyanide and 6-7 people died just by the actions of on person- now drugs are sealed better, but food isn't packaged very securely.

14. Not very original - dumb
The rajaneesh did it here in OR years ago. All buffet type service didn't end. If we weren't importing foods (nuts to steaks) from so many nations that hate us, we could even have a stronger home economy.

16. don't worry, we'll have another attack when BUshco needs a draft
That's how they'll justify it. Anyone asks him about his promise to have no draft, he'll say "the new attacks changed everything".

17. mark it on your calendars, folks, you read it here-today
It might be the only way to prove that you knew * would provoke/initiate an(other) attack. If enough people can claim this perhaps * won't be able to get away with it a second time

19. Maybe he should have done something about the problem
during the last 4 years.

Oh, no, all the money is going for the war in Iraq, because Saddam Hussein was behind 9/11 & had weapons of mass destruction.

Or was that the other guy?

21. I live in downtown DC.
If there were terrorists bent on destroying us, we would be dead by now. There are sooooo many vulnerabilities, it is outrageous.

Thompson is asking the same question everyone should be asking:

"If terrorists are among us and are bent on killing us all (as Bush/Cheney/everyone else says), where the hell are they, and what are they waiting for?"

Take your time.

24. Shrub's daddy
already terrorized our food supply by giving an open door to the makers of GE foods. No questions asked, to testing. As a biochemist and nutritionist, I tell you this is one of the greatest crimes against humanity in the history of the world.
