A winning strategy?: New states
I don't know where they would come from, the obvious choice is Puerto Rico. But think about it, if the democrats were able to get more states, not only would it help in the Electoral College, but in the Congress as well. Post all ideas for new states here.

16. Mexico doesn't want them.
However, cutting them loose seems like a great idea. Just give ample warning so that the wonderful Texas progressives can sell their houses and escape.

Texas (and the south, in general) produces some of the strongest, most committed lefties in the country. The other 75% of the state should be prevented from ever fielding candidates for national office, and cutting them loose seems like a great way to accomplish it.

3. Bush wants to "liberate" Cuba. The 51st state?
see a thread started last night. This is true--based on quotes in Newsday from a State Dept. official. Guess Bush needs more Cuban GOP votes for a third term.

4. I liked the migration idea better...
We need to get some of the excess tens of thousands of democrats from CA and the northeast to migrate to the near 50/50 states such as CO, NV, NM, FL, and OH, etc. An extra 100,000 democrats in those states would ensure us the white house every time, and would probably be cheaper than the gazillions of dollars spent campaigning in those states!

6. Why not divide California in half? (for two blue states instead of one)
And like you said, there is Puerto Rico, but there are also all sorts of little island territories here and there, aren't there?

Of course, I still think letting the South go ahead and secede is the best idea of all. Voila! Problem solved. We would still have red states, but just not the most rabid ones.

On I-5 North bound between Sacramento CA and Medford OR, there is a sign that says "State of Jefferson."

Probably a display of someone's expression of humor but on I-5 north bound between Sacramento CA and Medford OR, there is a sign that says "State of Jefferson." Can't remember exactly which state it's in...

19. Actually, I hadn't. But I seem to recall someone proposing an "Ecotopia"
state, and I think it referred to Northern CA. It is a different world from the southern part of the state.

27. Ecotopia
Ecotopia was one of the "Nine Nations of North America" which was written soemtime back in the seventies. Ecotopia was the thin sliver of northern California, Oregon, and Washington coast plus the Vancouver area. Pretty much all blue.

LA was in Mexamerica which essentially consisted of southern California, mexico, and Central America.

Eastern California was in the Empty Quarter

There was also the Breadbasket, Dixie, Carribean (including S. Florida), the Smokestack (industrial heartland), Northeast and Canadian maritimes, and Quebewc.

7. the obvious problem , of course, is that
as long as the banana republicans control congress, then none of this will happen if it benefits the democrats. you need the consent of congress for this sort of stuff.

and if they WERE to accept it, they'd split texas up into 6 states, which, i believe, is ALREADY permitted in texas's treaty of incorporation.

13. Four I think...
But you're right, that is allowed in Texas' constitution. They'd find a way to Gerrymander the new states so that 3 would be red and 1 would be blue and the blue one would be as small as possible.

22. Undecided if the federal district should be a state. Letting one state
have the capital may cause problems but then again those problems may have been overblown 200 years ago.

12. There's a reason that DC and Puerto Rico don't have representation...
The Democrats would have four more safe senate seats.

23. EV's don't matter, it's the fact that each state gets two senators...
That would be four more dem senators and a threat to their majority in the senate.

26. Mexico
Vincente Fox wants Mexicans in the us to get US citizenship, let them join the US. We could make 5 or 6 decent size states out of them and the Mexico/Belize border is far smaller to patrol for immigration purposes.

Group them together & call 'em something...American Oceania?

or give 'em some "power-name" like Patriotland..or Liberty Islands...maybe that'll help w/ a few votes in the Senate

33. I was just going to post something similar: Balkanize the blue states
Why not split up CA, PA, NY into 6 or more states. Threatening to do so might at least help get rid of the electoral college.
