Hutchinson's New Path Leads Home
http://www.nwaonline.net/articles/2004/12/04/opinion/53editorial.txt

... snip

If Asa Hutchinson resigns as the No. 3 official at the federal Department of Homeland Security and comes home to Arkansas to run for office, the state's political landscape will change dramatically.

Hutchinson, a former U.S. Congressman from Arkansas' 3rd District, has spent the last four years in the Bush administration, first as the head of the Drug Enforcement Administration, and then as an undersecretary in the Department of Homeland Security. But he has maintained close ties with supporters in Arkansas and an eventual return home to pursue political office was considered a given.

Now that Tom Ridge, Secretary of Homeland Security, has resigned and Hutchinson -- who was known to be interested in the job -- has been passed over, sources told Stephens Media Group a return to Arkansas could be imminent.

comment:

If Hutchinson thinks he can get elected to the Governor's post in Arkansas, he must be smoking something.
He has never won an election. He is totally unlikeable. In fact, I think Bush is getting rid of him because he is a liability. Hutchinson went to Bob Jones University; he is more dangerous than Ashcroft.

1. not totally accurate ...
He did manage to win in Arkansas's 3rd District but of course, any gop that runs wins that district.

5. True - I had forgotten about his foray into Congress.

He came on the heels of his brother, Tim, though; without his help he would never have made it. Everybody prefers Tim. Of course, now Tim has committed political suicide by divorcing his wife for the aide he was boffing.
Asa has always done better when working for polticians than in being one. He is a loyal henchman who will do anything to help the master. He is a masterful prosecutor without a shred of mercy. He resigned his Congressional seat almost immediately after Bush was selected in 2000 to work for his idol.
It is ironic than in so many ways Asa is more powerful than Tim. He is such an odd duck.
And he is cold and devoid of humor.

I actually know him quite well, but don't want to say how on a public board.

2. Don't know much about the likely dem nominee Beebe,
but he should start a national fund raising campaign. Many of us across the US would like to keep Hutchison out of politics.

3. Interesting...
I can't say much about Mike Beebe either - except he is from my county - a town about 10 miles away. I guess I could say he has been largely unimpressive to me. His wife just assumed the presidency of our county Dem club. I wasn't there for the elections b/c I have class on Thursday night.

The extent of my knowledge about Mike Beebe is that he was a lawyer in the law firm that my dad has used for years. But, my dad used a different lawyer in that firm.
