New national popular vote numbers
There may be a few states that are still counting. I am not sure yet if California is still counting, and New York will announce their final totals tomorrow, but these are the numbers:

George W. Bush 61,736,633 50.82%

John Kerry 58,549,877 48.19%

Ralph Nader 439,609 0.36%

Michael Badnarik 397,212 0.33%

Other (+) 363,354 0.30%

1. A 2.7% victory huh?
That hardly sounds like a mandate to me. And we all know he didn't really get that. Explain to me how a candidate with approval ratings between 45%-50% managed to get eleven million more votes than he did the last time?

BULLSHIT!!!!!

3. Sadly, he appears to be in power and his mandate is whatever
he says it is. It has always been their tactic to take everything they can and then to take more and make more of it.

He **never** had a mandate but he operates as if he did and his slavish followers feel better about it. Claiming the mandate builds the mandate.

6. And it's 1.64% diff. btwn. those voting for Chimp and those against.
If I did the math right.

However, I agree with you. Chimp's numbers are a lie.

2. New York and California had record low turnouts
Edited on Tue Dec-07-04 01:13 AM by JI7
i think the campaign should have spend some or the party should have made some effort to GOTV in solid red and blue states. this would have cut or exceeded the Chimp's popular vote lead.

much of the Chimp's popular vote increase is a result of increase in turnout in solid red areas in places like Texas, Alabama, etc.

4. Was it 'record low turnouts' (in CA and NY); or...
'record' ballot tossing? Both CA and NY are heavily Dem. Curious. Guess that why next time they're "re-districting"...so that they won't have to 'spoil' or 'tamper' with as many votes.

7. Chimpy's vote increase in red states--with electronic voting!
Here in Harris County, Texas, we'd used punchcards. The election commision prided themselves on keeping the machines in good shape; in case of a problem, we had the recount procedures signed into law by our last Governnor (you know who). Apparently Republican members of the commission pushed for electronic voting--which we've had since 2002. I believe Austin went electric that year as well.

Would Texas have gone blue otherwise? Probably not. But I'll bet the numbers for Bush's "mandate" would not have been so big if votes in more liberal areas had been counted fairly.
