Let's start the "Leviticus 20:10 Law" to freak out the Neocon Twits
Edited on Tue Dec-07-04 07:42 PM by zulchzulu

Leviticus 20:10
20:10  And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbor's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.

We need to have this law passed! Imagine... we could have a Leviticus 20:10 Execution Channel.

Basically, if you commit adultery, you get stoned to death. So, since all the hubbub about gay marriage based on religious law is being ballyhooed about, why not take the Religious Reich at their word and demand a "Leviticus 20:10 Law".

Hey, it's in the fucking Bible, so it must be right...no pun intended.

Let's start a Leviticus 20:10 movement. Then we can stone to death Newt a couple times...Rush three times...Falwell...

Let's do it! Someone grab the domain name.

www.leviticus2010.com

And NO HOMOSEXUALS would be subject to this law, since they are not allowed to marry. Hah! I love it.

I may redirect it to www.awolcowboy.com

Yet I think it would be a great way to smack back at the Religious Reich. Sink them at their own game.

18. Mark 10:11
And in this passage Jesus equates divorce and remarriage with adultery. Ergo, Mark and Leviticus together says anyone who is divorced and remarried is an adulterer and should be executed! But we must be merciful. I would think that requiring such persons to wear a scarlet letter "A" and the removal of all civil rights and recourse to the law should be enough. They should also be required to give up their immoral lifestyles and return to their real spouses. Immorality should not be tolerated.

Aimed at Christian impostors. You know the kind, "Do as I say, not as I do."

The kind of people who have no clue what "practice what you preach" means. Grabbing the beam in their eye and using it to whack me up the side of the head because I've got a mote in my eye. That kind of "Christian."

Not aimed at the real ones, who are easy to spot. They are kind, merciful and generous. Being in their presence makes you feel better about yourself, and about the world in general.

32. Sigh...
The "persecuted Christian" act is getting tired here.

You can't say ANYTHING remotely against the religious right here without somebody getting upset.

I find it absolutely mind-boggling that criticism against conservative Christianity brings up such strife here, especially because it is so tied up with politics.

It's getting pretty tiresome to explain the difference between the so-called "religious right" and the liberal Christians here. You would think most people would understand the difference by now.

I apologize if I "offended" you.

I don't know one bona fide biblical scholar who is a conservative Christian.
Not one.
Biblical scholars study scriptures and related works of the period. They have authority, but little power and are satisfied.
Conservative Christians try to manipulate such study for social control, profit, and power and are never satisfied.

35. Please help us, Carson.
I have an undergraduate minor in Religion from Texas Christian University (The best football team money can buy!), and I marvel at many fundamentalist Christians' pick-and-choose OT/NT mentality.

I think we DUers are talking about the pick-and-choose types, not those who live their beliefs and honor the true words and deeds of Jesus.

I don't believe that any DUer intentionally insults any true Christian on this board, but I recognize that some feel insulted regardless of the intention.

Perhaps "Present company excluded" or some such qualifier could help diffuse the current situation.

If you can, please help us figure out a way to express frustration with the religious right without insulting true Christians.

37. What you said here puts the finger on what bothers me the most about
us christians. You should be weary of explaining the difference between OT and NT law because christians are the world's biggest hypocrits.

According to theory, the OT should be superceded by the NT. But because there's no rationale for hatred under the NT, christians go right back to the OT to do their dirt.

When we christians need to justify war, violence, hatred, jealousy, etc., we have no choice but to invoke the OT. When we want to hurt someone, we invoke the OT.

In fact, the OT is used much more than the NT. And the truth of the matter is that christians have set up two gods who are definitely not the same. The OT god and the NT god. The OT god is like Allah of the islamic faith. Christians pretend they are the same god by claiming one is the son of the other. Pure genius. No wonder we are all nuts.

I choose (yes, choose) to believe in the NT.

A God who molded this marvelous earthly plane is clearly not a hateful, vengeful, one, IMHO.

40. Actually it almost does.
Adultery was a property offense. If she's under the authority of some other man--husband, slaveowner, or father--he owned her sexuality, and another man having sex with her was a crime.

So presumably a free, mature single woman was OK. However, among the O.T. Jews of this time she would have been a rarity. I don't think they had any concept of a autonomous single woman, free to make her own decisions about her sexuality.

38. Correct me if I'm wrong....but...
...doesn't the bible also say that if a man even looks at another man's wife his eyes should be plucked from his head!

(If that's the case, I want the white cane concession!)

Let's be clear here...according to the bible, men and women are NOT equal. Therefore, women can look, touch, f*ck another women's husband and it's fine and dandy. It's only leud and sinful behavior, worthy of execution and blindness, if men do it! So, in an affair, the man is killed and the woman lives on to f*ck another day, and eventually the male species gets killed off. (Women, being industrious multi-taskers, will keep enough sperm in the freezer so as not to extinquish the entire race.) Obviously, it's the goal of the bible and God to get rid of men create an all Lesbian race world...right?

....and...the bible says that "man being with man" is wrong. Nothing about women being with women. We need to inform the right-wing that: men marrying men = bad. Women marrying women = no problemo!

41. Just sent a message to my paper's online comments section
Edited on Wed Dec-08-04 12:17 PM by lawladyprof
My paper has an anonymous call/send in comments section. Here's what I just sent it.

The same book of Leviticus that tells us homosexuality is an abomination also tells us in chapter 20 verse 10 that adulterers should be put to death. And Jesus in Mark 10:11 equates divorce and remarriage with adultery! Who choses which parts of the Bible are still valid and true and which parts aren't?

I've just before that DU'ers find a paper (doesn't have to be where you live) that has this feature and start getting our arguments out in that forum. I send in three or four a week and one a week usually gets in.

Here's three in Georgia to get you started.

http://www.moultrieobserver.com/contactus/rantrave.htm
http://www.tiftongazette.com/contactus/rantrave.htm
http://www.timesenterprise.com/contactus/rantrave.htm

And, of course, you can check to see if yours got in. Don't send the same message or even about the same topic to each one. Send about different subjects (progressive arguments, conservative/administration inconsistencies, anyone?). If you give an address for a similar feature in a newspaper in your area, I'll send messages to them too.

I'm sure people must have seen that "Open Letter to Dr. Laura" a few years back--where the author took the Bible so totally literally and was asking Dr. Laura, who used the Bible to call homosexuality an "abomination", whether or not she thought shit like slavery would be ok, since it's upheld in the Bible. It was some great satire.
