Spitzer leads in the first poll taken so far

NY-Gov: Spitzer the early frontrunner
by kos
Wed Dec 8th, 2004 at 13:22:27 PST

When I announced Eliot Spitzer's candidacy a day or two ago, I called Spitzer the "frontrunner" with nothing more to go on than a gut feeling. Well, the first poll of the race suggests that Spitzer is, indeed, the guy to beat:

Quinnipiac Univ. 12/3-6. MoE 2.9% (No trend lines)

Spitzer (D) 50
Pataki (R) 38

Those are the sort of numbers that should give Pataki pause, and drive him to seriously consider retirement or the big bucks of the private sector. He fares no better in a hypothetical Senate race:

Clinton (D) 58
Pataki (R) 36

Now, moving into fantasy land, what would happen of Colin Powell ran for governor or senate?

Powell (R) 47
Spitzer (D) 42

Clinton (D) 49
Powell (R) 44

There is no indication that Powell is considering running for anything after his stint at State ends in January.

1. Well, these numbers mean that Diebold, Sequoia, & ESS
will have to write more source code to make sure that Pataki wins 51-49 (enough to give him a unassailable "mandate").

4. There are no electronic voting machines in NY
(I think) it's all the old lever-operated boxes.

6. That's weird - I could have sworn I saw a story on here right after
Nov 2 about how they were recounting Op-Scan ballots in a NY House Race and (surprise, surprise) the Democratic challenger was getting a lot more votes than the machine said she did the first time around. Anybody have a link to that story saved somewhere?

7. I could be wrong
I remember someone posting a map of troublesome voting machines by county nationwide, and NY looked all safe. But I could well have overlooked some district or other, or be misremembering the whole thing.

2. If anyone could crack the voter fraud case it would be
Spitzer so I wish he would join the effort!

3. doesn't look good for Powell
a few years ago i'm sure he would have been a lock to win if he wanted to run. but someone who is as "controversial" as Hillary(even if it's new york) beat him by 5 points doesn't look good.

i'm sure his numbers against spitzer is probably based more on name recognition. but that can easily be changed.

pataki is really unpopular isn't he ? i heard he only won because of things such as Cuomo being against the death penalty at a time when crime was a huge problem. and of course in the last election the democratic candidate had a lot of problems. if andrew cuomo had been the candidate i'm pretty sure he would have beat pataki then.
