"Democrats & Republicans praised his nomination" Why?
This is the mantra that CNN keeps repeating about Bernard Kerik. Why the hell would democrats praise this thugs nomination? You would think that these rich lawyering politicians would have a tinge of cynicism about Kerik. These power drunk fools are so out of touch with THE PEOPLE that it is fucking hard to keep faith. I thought this cop was suspect from the beginning and I don't know shit.

2. Hmmm.... And if CNN says it, it must be true....

Not that I doubt for a moment that there were Dems who waxed effusive over Kerik's nomination -- the same ones that are happy to kiss the chimperor's butt on any number of things.

But I would also take CNN's version of "Dems praised" with a big cup of salt. I'd like to know WHICH Dems, and what kind of statements were actually made by any of them.

If there's anything I'm more cynical about than the mainstream Beltway Dems, it's the SCLM ("so-called-liberal-media").

3. As I recall it was Hillary and Schumer who praised the nomination
of Kerik. Since they're both in NYS it sure makes me wonder how aware they are of important issues and why they didn't do their homework before publicly singing this jerk's praises.

7. Thank you. And I don't think the problem is lack of awareness...
It's become clear to me that the Ruling Class sticks together, whether there's a 'D' or an 'R' after their names. I'm sure their praise of Kerik had much more to do with the power structure of New York political connections than any failure to be aware of important issues.

It's pure power politics, not about "issues".

13. I really hope that it's not true - but there's a 50/50
chance that you're absolutely right. It's so discouraging to find only a handful of our leaders on the right side - not even the ones we'd expect and SHOULD be there. I'm really coming to the conclusion that Kerry sits right among those you described and that's sad indeed.

18. I'd rather NOT be right, but....
the "centrist" Dems have behaved so appallingly during these last 4 years -- no real opposition, lots of appeasement -- that I am hard-pressed to account for it in any other way.

8. Chuck and Hillary also voted for the budget bill . . .
that includes, among other things, funding for the "New Freedom Initiative" . . . and the presidential yacht . . . given that they represent me, I'm bitterly disappointed in both of them . . . disgusted, even . . . opposition party, my ass! . . . the Democratic Party REALLY needs to be returned to the people . . . we need progressive, populist leadership AND a progressive, populist platform . . .

Either way it's a bad situation.

14. I think that it makes sense for both NY senators to promote
a New Yorker who, presumably was a hero on 9/11. They can always say that they did not know about the other things, and praise him for stepping don.

4. One person's opinion
From the WP (published in the Strib):

Even before the nanny issue arose, Democrats believed that Kerik was the most vulnerable of Bush's second-term Cabinet nominations. Even White House officials realized he was becoming a lightning rod, although they had thought he would survive.

Democrats were focusing on the quick riches he had accumulated since resigning as police commissioner, a post he held during the 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. Since leaving his city office, Kerik had earned $6.2 million by exercising stock options he received as a director for Taser International, a stun-gun company that did business with the Department of Homeland Security.

9. Wow, a famous conservative who benifitted from 9/11
Both personally and financially.

No wonder Bush likes him so much.

5. Democrats are running scared.
Locked out of meetings and marginalized in every respect. These are the "Go Along to Get Along" (GAGA) Guys.

11. I commented several times here last week about this.

It wasn't just Hillary and Schumer but a whole host of slick " centrist" dems in the NYC pantheon.
Is is too much to ask of these people that they *occassionally* take a stand? Provide some actual "leadership"?

This is New York and it would not be tantamount to political suicide to provide some legitimate opposition to what's going on nationally and internationally.

I've come to a decision. I will no longer donate to the NYS party until I see some evidence of the party's interest in things I regard as important.

Why these people continue to get away with this is a mystery, not to mention an outrage. ( Schumer was not even challenged in a primary, difficult to do if the party bosses discourage it, even though his foreign policy is virtually indistinguishable from Bush's. Clinton's is only a "nuance" away.)

I say hold their feet to the fire.

16. unfortunately, it's all about retaining power; ergo, we get a crapload of
GAGA (Go Along to Get Along) from the politicos ... where's the Dems' outrage or integrity? anybody else think that the '06 and '08 elections are fixin' to become '02 and '04 redux without a systemic enema for these political crapheads?

Or is he just there to help plan for the next 9/11 event.

19. I'm pretty sure for Clinton and Shumer it was about the
distribution of the Homeland Security money; they thought a New Yorker would ensure that they would get money based on threat potential not how road funds are distributed.
