Do you think it was wise to hire Dick Morris to advise Democratic Party? |
|
Edited on Sun Dec-12-04 08:13 AM by kentuck
Bill Clinton hired him during his tenure. That's when they came up with the idea to "triangulate." In other words, both sides against the middle. It was a weak,non-committal, non-partisan strategy bent on political advantage only.
In the process, the Democrats surrendered their soul. We gave up what we believed in so we could win the next presidential election - as we were losing the House and the Senate. That's the legacy of the DLC. Because they were the people behind the strategy and were openly supportive of it.

5. No. Bill Clinton won the election in '96. |

We lost everywhere else. We didn't "win" anything.

So the President has nothing to say about the direction our Party goes? And the direction our party goes has nothing to do with whether we win or lose? Explain .

14. You yourself said that Morris came up with the triangulation. |
|
Hillary was against the triangulation method, but Morris convinced her because he said you just do it for the campaign and then when the election is over you can go back to what you really are. He used some metaphor about moving all the furniture to the center of the room and then after he leaves, she can move the furniture to wherever she wants.
So, yes Morris came up with the triangulation strategy and Clinton used it and Clinton won. Of course it helped that Dole was about as exciting as a corpse.
But Morris is still a back-stabbing, toe-sucking whore for money.

15. The only Democrat to win with that strategy was Bill Clinton... |
|
And you may take that as a "victory" for all of us. I do not. But, it fit right into the "moderate" approach of the DLC. I think it was devastating for our Party and has done irreparable harm. The entire party went along because it was a way to "win". What did we win? What do we have to show for it? Or was it just a temporary win - nothing that would last and benefit the Party or the people of this country?

16. I don't think every Democrat uses that strategy |
|
and even though the strategy most certainly worked to help us win the White House in '96, I don't think it would work in every situation at every time. It depends on the opposition candidate, the issues of the year, etc. For instance, if a moderate like McCain runs in '08, we will make no great strides with a moderate candidate like Clinton. It all depends on that specific election. Blanket statements are worthless, IMO.

burn baby burn. I don't even think that Jesus himself can rescue the democrats or our country. Besides, Jesus is now a rich, racist republican. I hear more people, openly, talk for racism and against affirmative action, no public schools, no welfare for people (for corporate America yes), no abortion laws, no gun laws, no to the ideal of USA's melting pot, no to the UN, no to foreign countries, no social security. Yes to White Power, Christianity and larger white families to diminish browns and blacks.
Bush has made our country a black and white strong issue led by the religious Jesus nuts. We can die fighting but we can't win.

that Clinton doesn't bang his head against the wall for having partnered with that shitweasel. Morris' sole mission since he was fired has been making Clinton look like a jackass. And bringing Morris in was the beginning of the frosty relations between Clinton and members of his once-loyal inner circle.
A common complaint from the Republicans during triangulation was -- he's stealing our ideas! I remember thinking, is this what success is supposed to look like? Ramming the other guy's agenda through, then claiming victory?

"Ramming the other guy's agenda through, then claiming victory?" That's what it amounted to, really. Welfare reform, NAFTA, Telecommunications Bill, etc...That was "their" agenda, not ours!

18. You have it backwards. It's working the middle against both sides. |

And that happened to be Dean's style of governance, too. Whether or not lefties like us appreciated it or not, it is what made them both successful in their jobs and that I will acknowledge.
