Local newspaper columnist calls Bush a moron
This is from my local newspaper, Newsday. The entire article is a good read. Below is the section on Bush.

Pentagon adept at deflecting truth

Les Payne
December 12, 2004

...snip...

In response to Kerry's attack about "mismanagement" of the war, Bush largely ignored the Iraq issue and instead reminded voters of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. This fear factor helped win Bush the election and the American voters have only themselves to blame for Bush's mismanagement of the Iraq occupation and for Rumsfeld's callous contempt for the soldiers he sends into battle, possibly to die.

This willful ignominy of the electorate recalls H. L. Mencken's observations 84 years ago. "When a candidate for public office faces the voters he does not face men of sense; he faces a mob of men whose chief distinguishing mark is that they are quite incapable of weighing ideas, or even of comprehending any save the most elemental - men whose whole thinking is done in terms of emotion, and whose dominant emotion is dread of what they cannot understand. ... The larger the mob, the harder the test. In small areas, before small electorates, a first-rate man occasionally fights his way through. ... But when the field's nationwide ... then all the odds are on the man who is intrinsically the most devious and mediocre - the man who can most adeptly disperse the notion that his mind's a virtual vacuum.

"The presidency tends, year by year, to go to such men. As democracy is perfected, the office represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. We move toward a lofty ideal. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their hearts' desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."

Mencken appeared to have seen it coming.

3. Newsday is Long Island NY paper
Long Island has been Red but is shifting to Blue. Newsday is a balanced paper with slightly liberal Editorials. They get a balance of hate mail and positive mail.

2. Mencken was right?
No offense to Mencken, but did we go from the genius of Clinton to the moronic Bush in just one election? Maybe Mencken was just a malcontent?

6. Was just surprised to see it in a newspaper article.
Have you seen very many, if any, journalists call Bush a moron? We know the sky is blue but don't most of major media keep trying to tell us the sky is red? That was the point of posting this.

8. You're right
They're cowards and they are ruled by the dollar rather than the truth.

9. But most elected Democrats are to frightened or dishonest to say this.
Why are Democrats too scared or dishonest to speak a few simple lines of truth about Bush?

10. I wish I knew the answer to that
We have to keep speaking out and support other who do the same. I just donated for the third time to the Cobb Recount Fund. They are speaking out to try to save our country. Our right to vote and to have that vote counted is how we attain all our other rights. Without it we have nothing.
