but doesn't Rudy have quite a few improprieties in his past and wasn't he involved in a very nasty divorce before 9-11 saved his career?

3. The less people know about Rudy the more they (may) like him

He got his butt kicked by Hillary Clinton early in the Senate race and a political reality became apparent. Rudy had already lost NYC and was counting on upstate voters to give him the seat. However, the more he campaigned upstate, the lower his numbers went.

In other words, just like in the City, the more they saw of the unedited Rudy, the less they liked him. Rudy withdrew from the race citing health problems which had been diagnosed many weeks earlier but the numbers tell the real story and you'll notice that Rudy plays down any future political ambitions.
