Republicans who invoke the names of Lincoln and Teddy Rooosevelt
Edited on Tue Dec-14-04 01:40 AM by bobweaver
just because they were members of the Republican party at their particular times in history make me sick. I want to wash their mouths out. Both Lincoln and Roosevelt did some VERY liberal things. Slavery ended on Lincoln's watch. 600,000 Americans had to die in the Civil War to settle the issue, but it was a victory for liberalism. The former slave states went for Bush. How can they possibly invoke Lincoln's name with regards to the Republican party of today? Roosevelt established vast tracts of land as national parks and forests, preserving them forever for future generations of Americans. This is something that would be unthinkable to Republicans today. Is there anything we can do to try to counteract the abuse of Lincoln's and Roosevelt's good names by these people?

2. If it's unimportant, why do the Republicans still use Lincoln?
The California Voter's guide, which is printed by the Secretary of State's office each election year and mailed free to all registered voters in California, contains party statements from each of the parties on the ballot. The Republican party almost always mentions the fact that Lincoln was a Republican. One year, the first two words of their party statement were "Abraham Lincoln." They are trying to milk Lincoln's name and the fact that he was a Republican in name, but I doubt very much that Lincoln would agree with the Republican platform of today.

4. It was the origins of their party
The Republicans formed over Free Soil. It's a proud heritage. They have a right to claim it. Ours, as the historical party of slaveholders, is far less noble. Obviously, the parties have changed dramatically, but I wouldn't be so surprised or outraged by their claiming a heritage from Lincoln. We need to acknowledge more clearly our own debt to FDR.
I'm still trying to digest the notion of Teddy Roosevelt as a "liberal." He laid the groundwork for American imperialism.
The trust busting was well and good, thought liberal is stretching it.
