Essays on converting from conservative to liberal |
|
Are there any existing essays on how to cast off the shackles of conservative ideology and enter the free-thinking, well-rounded, intelligent and well-informed arena of liberal thinking and thinkers? Which include step-by-step instructions for extricating one's mind from the carefully constructed and insidious web of lies, half-truths, distortions, oversimpliciations, twisted labels and mangled misinformation/noninformation which is used to buttress and support the empty house of cards that is the "conservative movement"? A list of the BIG LIES and their antidotes?

1. if you want to alienate people, go ahead. |
|
is there EVER a good way to "convert" people to your wise way of thinking? It's too risky. You may well turn people off to your beliefs and/or your friendship.
Just be a good example of a good person.

Blinded by the Right by David Brock. That's a very good place to start.
You might also want to check out Big Lies by Joe Conason.

What I am finding in my tiny corner of the world is that the truly rightwing is gone - they would just refuse to read any book a Dem asked them to read.I suppose if I offered to read one of their choice I might be able to make a deal with them.
On the other hand we as Dems have to get the truly independent voter to start to read these books. We are giving serious consideration to starting a progressive or timely topics book club in my area.

5. Statement by Eisenhower's son. |
|
Edited on Tue Dec-14-04 07:51 AM by July
During the campaign, Eisenhower's son wrote an article about why he was voting for Kerry despite being a lifelong Republican (he's a former ambassador, too).

6. How about Ed Schultz's "Straight Talk from the Heartland"? |
|
Sounds like you are looking for a "how-to" book to read yourself but this might be a book you could give to your conservative friends for them to read. I haven't read it yet but listening to Ed, he's not a "typical" liberal and he might be able to reach some of your less zealous conservative targets.

7. I think this is a great idea |
|
and I don't know why there isn't more discussion about it. We all know that so many conservatives are living under a blanket of lies and that they suck in and fall for all that right wing hate and propaganda, so shouldn't there be better ways of making them understand this so they can see the light?
