A Push to Restrict Sales of Video Games
I'm a civil libertarian, so I don't want the government to "protect" children from video games.

A Push to Restrict Sales of Video Games

Illinois Governor Seeks to Prevent Minors From Purchasing 'Adult Material'

By Peter Slevin

Washington Post Staff Writer

Thursday, December 16, 2004; Page A08

CHICAGO. Dec. 15 -- Decrying violence in fast-selling video games, Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) wants Illinois to make it illegal for anyone younger than 18 to buy violent or sexually explicit games. Among the targets would be the Grand Theft Auto series, Halo 2 and Mortal Kombat.

<snip>

"This is all about protecting our children until they are old enough to protect themselves," said Blagojevich in a written statement. "There's a reason why we don't let kids smoke or drink alcohol or drive a car until they reach a certain age and level of maturity."

<snip>

Blagojevich, who intends to announce his plans formally on Thursday, is the latest in a long line of politicians to challenge violence and sexual content in the audio and video world. Others include Tipper Gore, Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman (D-Conn.) and Federal Communications Commission Chairman Michael K. Powell.

1. Ah, Tipper Gore and Lieberman--together again
Now I remember why I had to hold my nose to vote for Gore/Lieberman in 2000.

If only Frank Zappa was still around. Damn, I miss him.

2. Well, GTA III is not exactly a Playschool game
I guess I am torn between the fact that these games are reprehensible and tasteless in all regards to human decency and the fact that this is more censorship. Video games used to be kind of toned back and reasonable in nature. Now they are an interactive form of pornography, both sexually and from a violence standpoint. I still have not seen a real study done to show a correlation between violence and video gaming, though...

4. I guess he didn't get the memo.
Violent video games can desensitize youth to war. Doesn't he want more effectively trained psychos to send over to the middle east? OH, wait! He's a Democrat. That's why he didn't get the memo. (Tongue firmly in cheek, everyone.)

5. If they ban them...
...people will download them from the Internet. That's pointless.

6. What I want to know is this--what about "AMERICA'S ARMY"???
Edited on Thu Dec-16-04 04:25 AM by Khephra
Are they planning on restricting access to AMERICA'S ARMY?

Unless they keep children and teens from playing AMERICA'S ARMY, the first person shooter put out by the army as a recruitment tool, then everyone involved with this action are freeping hypocrites.

The killing game
For young men, first-person shooters are the hottest computer games around. That’s why the Army’s spent $10 million making one of its own. But there’s a catch. Big Brother gets to watch you play.

snip...............

From an Army report: “Aptitudes related to information handling and information culture values are seen as vital to the effectiveness of the high-tech, network-centric Army of the future, and young American gamers are seen as especially proficient in these capabilities. More importantly, when young Americans enter the Army, they increasingly will find that key information will be conveyed via computer video displays akin to the graphical interfaces found in games.”

With the vast funding of the U.S. government behind them, the Army/Navy team began developing a game that hopefully would turn some of its players into real soldiers. “The overall mission statement ... was to develop a game with appeal similar to the game Counter-Strike,” wrote Michael Zyda, the director of the Navy think tank. “We took Counter-Strike as our model, but with heavy emphasis on realism and Army values and training.”

An experimental psychologist from the Navy helped tweak the game’s sound effects to produce heightened blood pressure, body temperature and heart rate. It was released in digital double surround sound, which few games are. In terms of game play, it was designed as a “tactical” shooter, slower-paced, more deliberate, but with Counter-Strike’s demanding squad tactics and communications--a “serious” game for kids who took their war gaming seriously.

After two years of development, America’s Army was released to the public on the first Fourth of July after 9/11. The gaming world gasped and then cheered. Contrary to expectations, the government-made shooter was every bit as good a $50 retail shooter and, in some ways, better. Plus, it was free--downloadable from the Internet at www.americasarmy.com. That, too, was a calculation--one the Army hoped would weed out people who didn’t know much about computers. The game and its distribution system were difficult by design, Zyda said.

Personally, I think AMERICA'S ARMY is more dangerous than any game--even including GTA.

8. I agree with a rating system on games, and just like kids
under 17 are not allowed in "R" rated movies, I'd agree with not allowing kids under 17 to rent an "M" rated game (and I'm flexible on the age - 16 sounds more appropriate).

But...games where characters physically hurt each other? I play only Zelda games....Link is always killing his enemies and I don't see this as a game that has to be restricted to 17+.

This is ridiculous.

9. Who decides?
Can I make a list of books for them to consider while they are at it?

We never allowed our kids to have a game console and restricted what computer games they could get. I figured that was MY job as a parent.
