My podiatrist has a Xmas card from Rick Santorum

Yesterday I went to the foot doctor (nothing wrong with my dogs, but I was recently diagnosed with diabetes and was referred for an initial checkup). As a point of reference, I live in Houston.

In the examination room there were several photos of my doctor, Jeffrey Ross, running in the NYC Marathon, going back to 1983.

And one of him jogging with my state's governor, Rick Perry. It is signed "To my Mentor and Friend".

OK, I thought; I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he went to Texas A&M with Goodhair, or treated his feet or something.

So Dr. Ross finally comes in (at 4:35; my appointment was for 3 pm) and greets me warmly and explains things in great detail -- in short, makes a wonderful first impression. In fact, he has the best bedside manner of any doctor I've had in my life.

He's originally from Rhode Island; is a big Red Sox fan; we talk about Pedro and Renteria and such. By this time I have forgotten about the picture on the wall behind me.

So we complete the examination and I go to the front and make a follow-up appt. and arrange for a visit to the orthotics store and blahblahblah, and while I am on the way out I see a door full of Christmas cards and family photos and such and walk over to look at them.

I see Orlando Sanchez and family (a former city councilman and GOP candidate for Houston mayor an election cycle back). I see Mayor Bill White and his family (White is a former state Democratic party chairman, but he is a conservative Dem and goes out of his way to be non-partisan these days).

I see Senator John Cornyn and his family (this one starts to rankle me. Cornyn is not only a zealot but he's also a complete moron).

Then I see a Christmas card from Rick Santorum and his family.

Now how exactly does a foot doctor in Texas get on Rick Santorum's Xmas card list?

By doanting a lot of money to his campaign, I'm guessing.

I have a call in to Dr. Jeffrey Ross, but I don't expect he's going to call me back. And I don't expect I'll be keeping my appointment in February with him, either.

Doctors are usually Repubs, but hopefully you can find one that doesn't parade his chumminess with the scum of the earth all over his office.

5. Too bad

Finding a good doctor who listens and engages with a patient is always nice, but there are a lot of them out there. When you talk to the doctor's staff person to explain that you're breaking the appointment, be sure to mention the reason and indicate that you're fully available to discuss this with the doctor if he would like (and be serious about that).

There's no reason to spend your money supporting this man as long as you have a choice.

Some times the physician who literally saved my mom's life makes Republican talking points during her visit but besides that he's true salt of the earth...


He overcame childhood polio to become a physician...


He's one of the few Republicans I truly like and respect...

14. If he donates money to Rick Santorum, then I wouldn't trust his judgement

in ANY endeavor. I hope you find another doctor soon!
