Fox News really going after the anti-Christian angle
I was flipping channels today and landed on Fox News for a sec. Hannity and Colmes were doing some weird town hall thing in San Francisco and they were talking about all the 'anti-Christian' actions that have been going on lately. They actually had great liberal guests on... I was surprised. The first guy was a historian of some type and he was kicking Hannity's ass. Anyways, I just couldn't believe the conservative guests they had and how they were trying to push the anti-Christian angle. They really are trying to drive the country further apart. It's kinda scary... it almost seems like there is going to be some serious liberal persecution in the near future. Even though they have all the power, the Christian fundamentalists are still playing the victim... they seriously won't be satisfied until the US is a theocracy.

1. Am I the only one thinking this is a total diversion?
if we can duke it out with our neighbors and friends over this stupid "Christmas under seige" meme, maybe we won't notice that Bush is once again robbing us blind with SS "reform," tort "reform," and tax "reform."

3. Diversion is their entire game. Remember the color alerts
when something not praiseworthy for Shrub was coming out concerning Osama bin Laden, they used that as a diversion. They are very good at trying to make others feel guilty about trusting him. This administration is the corrupt corporation that will take every cent of your tax dollar to do with as they please. And they seem to be winning.

11. well, yeah, granted, but I'm talking tactics here
and I really am thinking we should stop feeding this stupid beast.

Not the OP, just the "Christmas under seige" crap. Let 'em fuss, let's focus on the theft going on (because God knows our Democratic "leadership" sure ain't--they appear to have taken the month off and won't get around to electing a DNC chair until Feb.)

2. I don't really think they're anti- Christian. They're really
anti-Republican. Republicans have learned that if they're going to carry a big stick, the cross is the best choice.

It's sad, really.

5. I think they're pushing the anti-Christian angle because ...
Edited on Fri Dec-17-04 10:15 PM by BattyDem
they want to get average Americans into a panic, so they'll say, "Oh no! They're trying to outlaw Christianity! What? The government wants to make it our "official" religion in order to protect it? What a great idea! That way, no one will EVER take Christmas away from us." :eyes:

Impossible. It doesn't happen, EVER.

Have you watched the DVD "Outfoxed?" Watch it. It will cure you of watching right wing political attack propaganda machines thinly disguised as "news."

I find it hard to watch how your media seems to go out of its way to make issues like this up.

I thought seperation of church and state was progression but it seems to be going backwards recently in the states. Like all the "christmas under attack" crap I see going on.

Religion has really become a HUGE issue in the states, and it is a really touchy subject, especially when there are really important news stories going on in your massively large, f-d up country. Its almost like you WANT to be divided... I thought you were going to UNITE after this election (then Bush had his victory speech eh)

my fav. quote is: GWBush:'On the issue of evolution, the verdict is still out on how God created the Earth.'

I have seen polls where 51% of Americans believe in creationism, 44% of Americans think there should be restrictions on Muslims. These religious stories have been coming out of the woodwork recently and Im up here shitting my pants, I use to think Canada looked up to the USA, but now, now I dont know what to think.

DUers think the whole situation is f*cked up, too. We don't want religion in our politics ... but unfortunately, our country, our government and our media has been taken over by some right-wing thugs ... and we're having a bit of trouble taking it back. :(

I find it hard to watch how your media seems to go out of its way to make issues like this up.

They need to cater to morons to make a profit. Right now the morons are most selfcongratulatory about being Suffering Christians, and this is a way of stroking that egotism.

I thought seperation of church and state was progression but it seems to be going backwards recently in the states. Like all the "christmas under attack" crap I see going on.

The reactionaries are corrupting enforcement of all parts of our Constitution. There are particular parts they absolutely don't want to enforce, and over time they have to corrupt the other parts because all the pieces are interconnecting in the life of the country.

'Religion' is not the issue. It's the privileged status of certain varieties and the political power of it.

I have seen polls where 51% of Americans believe in creationism,

Find out the age distribution to that and assume that 90% of the people over 40 hardly know anything substantive about Evolution at all.

44% of Americans think there should be restrictions on Muslims.

Well, 90% of Anglophone Canadians think there should be restrictions on churning the pot on Quebecois independence.

I use to think Canada looked up to the USA, but now, now I dont know what to think.

When I lived in Toronto for a couple of years I don't think I ran into admiration proper for the U.S. very much.... It's a big brother/little brother relationship.

from Rove, RNC. Daily. To CNN probably too and a few others. The rest, simply parot it and, voila! It looks like a legitimate issue.

13. Why does everyone who sees something interesting on Fox
always say they were "channel flipping" and "happened to stop?" I've heard that used a lot as a qualifier for a bit of news picked up on that station.

Don't be ashamed. There is nothing wrong with gathering information from various sources.

16. Probably because they don't want to admit
to purposely watching a right wing political attack machine that spews nothing but propaganda that has the balls to call itself "news" and I can't say I blame them for feeling a bit embarrassed about it.

FUX news is not a source. Have you watched "Outfoxed?" They have one agenda and one agenda only. It is total propaganda.

17. "they were "channel flipping" and "happened to stop?"
I think most of are channel flipping when it comes to Fox....it takes a special person to be able to stay with that channel for long. You have to be able to be emotionally detached while all your values and beliefs are being insulted and belittled, I for one cannot do that. So if I stay there for very long it has to catch my eye and ear very fast, be very interesting, and even then I don't usually last more than five minutes. Its like listening to Limpballs or furious george himself, I feel sick and have to move on.

15. This is the stupidest "cause" the wingers have
yet come up with. I think their followers keep getting dumber and dumber, so they have to keep coming up with more ridiculous things to keep them entertained. Or maybe they are just desperate. There was "media are all liberals", "white men are downtrodden", "Bush is a good man", and now "they won't let us have christmas". I think republicanism is a mental illness.

And for god's sake, TURN OFF FOX NEWS. WHAT THE UFCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?

18. Radical Right Wingers have hijacked Christianity!
Bush's policy of pre-emptive strike is dirctly opposite to Christ's Golden Rule. Fox is nothing more than a right wing propaganda machine to push Bush's war mongering tactics.

Christ was not an egotist but the right wingers act as if the Nativity Scene must be thrown into the faces of all Americans.

This despising the usage of "Happy Holidays" rather than "Merry Christmas" is typical of the lack of thinking by the Christian hijackers. Christ would have preferred "Happy Holy Days" because it is inclusive of all religions.

21. The far right are trying to take over society. They believe it is God's w
ll. The scary part is how much they've accomplished toward this insane goal. No, really, I'm serious.

War on Secular Society

"We need to find ways to win the war" Karl Rove, President Bush's political director told a gathering of the Family Research Council in March, 2002. The Family Research Council is one of the most powerful lobbying organizations of the Religious Right today. Rove wasn't talking about the war on terrorism. He was talking about the war on secular society.

22. If you are a Right-Wing ideologue it is not insane

Twenty years ago or more it occurred to me that facism in the US could only come in the guise of some kind of "Christian" politics. Nazis are regarded about as seriously as in the Blues Brothers movie. If you're looking for the facists to have swastika armbands forget it. No, here it'll all be about the cross. And in their eyes it is perfect. You don't have to be an arch conservative fundamentalist to get worked up about a perceived attack on xmas. Even people who haven't been to church in decades still consider themselves xtians in some way and like xmas. xtianity almost perfectly draws the lines where they want them. The trick for those of us fond of the 1st ammendment's protections is to divide the power-hungry theocrats from the people who enjoy the stories about the peaceful god-man who saves us and like to hang up stockings. I don't know how we do that.
BTW I went Christmas shopping at Target and enjoyed the quiet going in and out. I have nothing against the Sally, but what's the deal with mixing all that military crap with Jesus???

23. The trouble with winning using a hate agenda, is that when you
win, you have no one left to blame, no one to hate blame. When that happens, people start looking at you differently.

It will be interesting to hear how these guys cope.

25. The beauty of a hate agenda: you never run out of things to hate

"One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we've been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We're no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It's simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we've been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back. So the old bamboozles tend to persist as the new ones rise."
Carl Sagan, "The Demon Haunted World", 1995

29. An interesting point...
Am I the only one who notices that the right-wing theocrats tend to avoid Jesus? They never, EVER quote him. Oh no, they're busy quoting Leviticus (Which is against eating shellfish and pigs, as well as encouraging people to sacrifice goats) and "prophets." Quote Jesus saying "Love thy neighbor as thyself" "Do unto others what you would have them do unto you." and "Judge not lest ye be judged" and they'll splutter and turn all kinds of funny colors.
