WHO saw Moyers last PBS show?... rightwing media... and how
it distorst the truth. 1 right wing guest said all journalism is opinion (let me guess.. the bible is fact). They talk to several people that worked for several companies from fox to clear channel and they where told specificaly to say or not say certain things...they refused and were fired. Objective and informative reporting is almost dead... but we can revive it, turn the finiancial thumbscrews hard on these media shams!

2. I was only disappointed that Bill didn't ask the question "Why?" when the
point was made that the market allowed "opinion only" journalism to flourish. THAT'S the answer I want to hear on TV.... that people are thoughtless and fear-driven, and that the free market brings out much of the WORST in people, not just the best.

16. Wow and here
I thought journalist were supposed to get the facts of the story. Unless it's an opinion piece of course. Now that's opinion.

20. Well, I think journalism is supposed to be about facts, not opinion. But
opinion sells, and I wanted to hear Moyers go further and ask the question, "Why does the market buy opinion over fact?"

Clear Channel stations. I think it's a lousy deal for the long term .....It's vulnerable.

7. That segment needs wide distribution
Was thinking while watching it that everyone needs to see this, but how to get into MSM?
He did a good job of summarizing the problem.

8. I'll miss Bill
He's the best, been my Friday night date since the beginning. We need to clone him, keep some sanity in the media. Hope David can fit into those enormous shoes.

9. Why we need new leadership in the Dem party
Edited on Sat Dec-18-04 03:02 AM by SemperEadem
Those who we think are on our side are the ones handing us to the devil.

http://www.pbs.org/now/politics/slaughter.html

BILL MOYERS: What happened to the fairness doctrine? It was in effect for years. In the early '80s the Federal Communications Commission decided to…

LOUISE SLAUGHTER: Do away with it the grounds, on the grounds that they said it was not a law. It was just a policy. Congress then sprang into action and passed a law putting it into a law that…

BILL MOYERS: They overrode the FCC?

LOUISE SLAUGHTER: They overrode the FCC. And I'll tell you that it was such an astonishing vote. I think it was three to one in the House, two to one in the Senate. Among the people voting for it were Jesse Helms, Newt Gingrich and others.

BILL MOYERS: To keep the fairness doctrine.

LOUISE SLAUGHTER: To keep the fairness doctrine and codify it into law. But President Reagan vetoed it. And I remember my party was in charge at the time, the Democratic party.

And I went to the leadership. And I said, "This is outrageous. We've got to try to override that veto." And they would not. They did not make any attempt despite the overwhelming vote in both houses to codify the fairness doctrine. They refused to try to override that veto. And we tried again in about 1993, I think. But it didn't go anywhere.

And throughout all this time, I was also sponsoring a piece of legislation to require the broadcasters using our airwaves to give a small box of time to the challenger and the incumbent free. And they'd break it up into 60 seconds, whatever. It wouldn't bore people. But the candidate had to sit as you and I are sitting and talk to the camera. And we wouldn't have all these voice-overs. And I tried that one for six years and found out a few years ago that the broadcasters spent $11 million to kill that one amendment."

Then today, I see video of * at some photo-op smiling and clapping Joe Lieberman on the back before sitting down and signing something.

10. Hitler reference
Check the transcript when it becomes available. On tonight's show Moyers compared the Bush Regime to Hitler. It was in the beginning of the show and he phrased it as only Moyers can.

Bush to Hitler? Now that's classic. Hopefully it'll rerun again so I can see that! Don't PBS also put video's up of programs?

Actually he referred to the author of "Mein Kaumf" (not sure how to spell that).
I don't know if they put up videos but they will have a transcript, maybe in a few days. They usually rerun the program on Sunday at 11:00 pm EST so check your listings.

Oh and welcome to DU.

14. Perfect! Thank you all!...
I've been having some very interesting conversations with one of my co-workers. He's 21, voted for the shrub, thinks the media is still liberal. His father also works there, and I hear the same things from them both. When I brought up * getting rid of the bus. tax cut for health care, it was "That's not true. What, did ya read that in the Liberal media" But lately, I've seen chinks in the armor. He's heard the rumors of a draft, doesn't believe them, but you can tell he has thought about what that would mean for him. I've spoken about my son, and how afraid I am for him, considering the decisions Bush has been making. (Boy, do I have to tone down my comments! I would scare all these repugs shitless, if I really spoke my mind) I made a comment the other day, how business is so slow (recycling) when this is usually our busiest time of the year. I told them in Sept. that this would happen if * was re-elected. He remembered that.

I'll be able to use this to explain how the liberal media is now the corporate media.

Yippie!!! - converting the unbelievers one at a time!

18. On this other
board whenever I post something negative about what's going on in Iraq or with Bush it's "liberal media." But the places I post news from are Yahoo, CNN, MSNBC, ABC etc. I think the Bushie's use "liberal media" rant when they know it's true and want to deny it. It's denial in it's best.

19. Moyers farewell is a great loss to all of us ...
The show was excellent ... I missed the 8pm original lineup and had to wait till 1am to catch it but a pot of coffee insured that I wouldn't nod off.

His coverage of the right wing media takeover was excellent and should be viewed by everyone. Maybe it will available on the pbs site. If it is make every effort to watch.

Bill Moyers is one example of an excellent journalist. We're losing many and the loss of Moyers will be felt for a long time to come. I'm afraid that in our future we won't find any journalists who provide us with the genuine fair and balanced perspective with the integrity and journalistic excellence exemplified by Moyers.
