1. probably not
those senators are known for foreign policy/national security issues and are often on shows to discuss those matters.

2. Of Course. Which is what makes them prime candidates.
If Rumsfeld goes you don't think at least one of these guys is on the short list, and that they and Russert are not well aware of it?

4. unlikely
lugar and warner are kind of independents and are not the type to go along with whatever the administration wants and therefore would not be trusted.

and biden and levin are democrats so of course they aren't going to be asked.

bush wants loyalty. that's why rumsfeld is staying or hasn't been asked to leave. anyone who has fucked up as rumsfeld has would have been asked to leave. even for pr purposes most would have got rid of him. but i'm guessting unless they find someone else who is loyal in the same way rumsfeld will be staying.

5. Responding to 4 and 3:
I'm not saying Bush would pick these guys, but they are on the short list, and their appearance on Russert this morning confirms that IMO.

It seems that in Washington if you ever make "the short list" for a prominent job it is in itself a significant resume' enhancement.

Hagel was on the short list for Bush's VP choice in '00, for example.

3. Well if the R-Warner leaves
Then the D-governor Mark Warner could appoint a Democrat to the Senate. So I doubt the Busheviks will choose him. And if Levin leaves, which I seriously doubt that he would work for this criminal administration, then we have a D governor there as well.
