Well, Lord is the proper companion title to Lady, like Duchess/Duke, Earl/Countess, etc. It sounds totally strange to those of us not from countries with royalty. Personally, I hope they go with this, just so I can giggle every time I hear it.
First Gentleman sounds like a stripper club. First Roommate... lol.

12. Interesting question. I think a newly coined word will be needed. |
|
There isn't yet a formal title because gay marriage is not yet widely accepted as being equivalent to hetero marriage. I hope Iive long enough to see what is eventually chosen as the formal term when it is fully accepted.
It's not perfect, but I rather like "First Companion." One problem with it is that it doesn't necessarily imply a permanent bond equally binding to both sides and encompassing all levels of life together. To me, "First Partner" has a funny sound to it, like a cowboy movie or something, though it does capture more of the idea of a relationship of equals facing life together. Perhaps a new word will be coined, since at least to my knowledge, none of the common English ones in use really do the job. That's what a living language does -- evolves new words for new experiences and discoveries and ways of life.

We won't have an openly gay President in this century is my guess.
============================= President Josiah Bartlet:You got a best friend? Roger: Yes, sir. President Josiah Bartlet: Is he smarter than you? Roger: Yes, sir. President Josiah Bartlet: Would you trust him with your life? Roger: Yes, sir. President Josiah Bartlet: That's your chief of staff.
=============================
I'm still waiting for the first woman President. We Might have a shot at that.

28. I guess it depends on whether they'd be able to get married legally |
|
Does anyone recall the last time there was an unmarried President, with a significant other? (I remember there was a situation in Mexico recently, where they had to hire someone to be official hostess since the President wasn't married -- there wasn't a spouse available to be "First Lady".)
"First Gentleman" sounds kind of old-fashioned, but no quainter than "First Lady" I guess. It would also work for the husband of a straight female President.
